Japan’s interpreters struggle to make sense of ‘Trumpese’
The Japan Times ^ | Feb. 17, 2017 | Tomohiro Osaki

“He rarely speaks logically, and he only emphasizes one side of things as if it were the absolute truth. There are lots of moments when I suspected his assertions were factually dubious,” said Chikako Tsuruta, who routinely covers Trump-related news as an interpreter for CNN, ABC and CBS. “He is so overconfident and yet so logically unconvincing that my interpreter friends and I often joke that if we translated his words as they are, we would end up making ourselves sound stupid,”...This challenge, the likes of which they claim was not an issue when interpreting for renowned orator Barack Obama

It doesn't take much to translate, "Me, uh, I, hmm, I, huh, me, me, me."

Bet she takes liberties with Trump's words since she's on CNN's payroll.

LOL! I guess that shows you the depths to which oratory has plunged.

Trump speaks like a New Yorker. He is very American.

Japan is very different. I am by no means an expert, but I do not think the Japanese puff out their chests and speaks with absolute confidence. It’s not their way. So I imagine they find Trump a little confusing.

Obama was narcissistic, but not really confident and manly in the way that Trump is.

BTW — there is an old joke about two Americans listening to Hitler in the 1930s. One of the Americans knew German and agreed to translate for the other. Well, Hitler starts speaking and he goes on and on and on and the second American says to the First “I thought you were going to translate for me!” and the First one says: “I can’t tell what he’s saying until he uses a verb!”

Because German is a tricky language too.

I’d be curious how “bigly” is translated, or even more, pronounced in Japanese!

The word order is almost exactly opposite from English but I can’t understand what extra challenge Trump poses other than speaking contemporaneously and injecting spontaneous asides into his prepared speeches.

The most trivial, inane, childish rants are raised up by the liberal media as though they were edicts from Delphi. This is high among silly for silly sake.

It is only people who have not been brainwashed by the socialist college`s that can understand what a man like trump is saying.

The dingbat socialists can never interpret what Trump is saying because the only vision they have is more socialism.

Trumps plans do not fit in with socialism so the socialists are lost as they have no vision of a free society but only of Government dole outs.

One for this one, two for this one, nothing for these because they still work and support themselfs, and the rest for the betters who work in Government and give their support to the socialist agenda.

I think the Japanese would understand "big league" given how bigly they are into baseball.

It doesn’t matter to me if the Japanese interpreters are confused. I understand Trump, perfectly.

CNN’s interpreters, not Japan’s.

Abe seemed to understand Trump just fine.

“From the most xenophobic country on the planet.”

My frat mate from Stanford teaches high school or “gakuen” there and sometimes called by the US Embassy for translations.

You think the ‘NO FOREIGNERS ALLOWED’ sign was a myth? I SAW IT myself when I visited him a year ago. Yokohama is notorious for this. These Jap kids are taught English at HS but after graduation couldn’t speak/write/read English if their lives depended on it.

Trump’s style of speaking is actually quite easy to translate into Japanese.
