To most observers, nothing stood out about Dorsa Derakhshani last month when she competed at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival. The 18-year-old female grand master fared fine on the board, twice using the Four Knights defense, and looked like any other teenager you might see in the British territory that borders southern Spain.
But to the head of the Iranian Chess Federation, Derakhshani practically committed an act of treason.
Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh didnt have a problem with Derakhshanis play, but her headwear. Derakhshani wore a simple headband in her long hair, instead of a hijab, Irans traditional headscarf, which became a compulsory accessory for women after the 1979 revolution. As a result, Pahlevanzadeh announced on Monday that Derakhshani would be kicked off the national team.

Not surprised.
Chess is just a game.
"country that doesn't recognize Israel as a state" is the sanitized, Washington Post way of covering up the fact that its a government that hates Jews.
And bravo to these kids for standing up to oppression. Not often that you get teenagers standing up for their beliefs like this. Pampered US snowflakes should take notice of what real activism looks like.

Chess player Nazi Paikidze will not attend - she refuses to wear the hijab.
And of course the WaPo comments seem to focus on bashing Trump, not the backwards Iranian powers-that-be. They can find a way to bash him in every topic!
Does she speak English? I’ll give her sanctuary at my place.
“Chess is life.”
Good for her for doing this. The American female champion also refused to wear the sign of female oppression and didn’t go.
Check and Mate.
She’s Iranian? There must be a village somewhere in Iran where they are all direct descendants of soldiers from the army of Alexander the Great.
OMG, what a beauty ...
Iran has it’s share of heart stopping beautiful women. Iran just won’t let us see them.
I did an image search for this chess girl named Dorsa Derakhshani. That photo you posted is definitely NOT her. The girl in your photo looks more northwestern European.
That is possible. When I did the search, it brought up that picture with the caption that Iran had banned chess champion Dorsa Derakhshani., and the caption had her name. I’ll look for another to try to get it right.
Yup, that’s her. A side profile photo showing her nose, really highlights her Iranian ethnicity.
I know several Iranians whose parents fled here during the revolution. They’re all white, maybe two of em are slightly darker then the average southern European.
Ya, but I’ll bet none of them looked like the girl in post #9.
Iranians = Aryans. The darker skinned Iranians you see today are the descendants of southern invaders.
