Trump signs bill undoing Obama coal mining rule

President Trump on Thursday signed legislation ending a key Obama administration coal mining rule.   The bill quashes the Office of Surface Mining's Stream Protection Rule, a regulation to protect waterways from coal mining waste that officials finalized in December. The legislation is the second Trump has signed into law ending an Obama-era environmental regulation. On Tuesday, he signed a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution undoing a financial disclosure requirement for energy companies.

Both the mining and financial disclosure bills are the tip of a GOP push to undo a slate of regulations instituted in the closing days of the Obama administration. The House has passed several CRA resolutions, and the Senate has so far sent three of them to President Trump for his signature.

Regulators finalized the stream protection rule in December, but they spent most of Obama’s tenure writing it.

The rule is among the most controversial environment regulations the former administration put together. The coal mining industry said it would be costly to implement and lead to job losses across the sector, which is already suffering from a market-driven downturn in demand for its product.

At the signing, Trump called the regulation "another terrible job killing rule" and said ending it would save "many thousands American jobs, especially in the mines, which, I have been promising you — the mines are a big deal."

"Market-driven" my ass. The downturn is directly related to the EPA and other Obama destruction policies.

Worth my vote, if Trump does nothing else for four years.

The effete friends of Obama and Hillary would happily destroy the lives of 1.8 million people of the state of West Virginia, so they could drink wine and cheese with America’s enemies at the UN and congratulate themselves that they had solved the nonexistent problem of global warming.

US has perhaps the greatest energy reserves. Heck with countries that won’t join the civilized world.

Check out the video of this signing. Trump shows genuine affection for the hard working miners, and was so anxious to connect with them and show then the oval office, he almost forgot to sign the bill.

He gave everyone who wanted to speak and opportunity to say something, and you could feel the mutual love and respect he and the reps/miners had for each other.

I had tears in my eyes. It is so wonderful to have a president who knows the value of hard work, and the meaningful toil of those in the energy sector.

I agree. We export mining equipment primarily to coal and gold miners. Yes there was a market downturn but that was the smaller part of the problem

Those commie bastards at the EPA are determined to wipe the coal industry out.

So tell the tens of thousands of coal miners who have lost their jobs over the last six years that they will simply have to retrain for the new economy.

I hope every bastard at the EPA meets a bad end.

Trump knows the value of clean coal and cares for all the miners impoverished when Obama’s anti-coal rules shut them down.

Our city, Logansport Indiana, closed its power plant and we are buying power from some other source because of Obama’s asinine restrictions....pathetic.

Huge! —and every regulation overturned by the CRA like this, by law, can never be re-implemented by future administrations. It amounts to a permanent ban on the regulation unless enacted by Congress in new legislation.

It’s best to mine and sell the coal while there’s still a market for it. It was never a good idea to completely eliminate it from collection of energy sources.
