Kim Jong-nam Allegedly Met N. Korean Agents

Seoul - Moon Sung-hui

2017-02-15

Anchor: Before his assassination in Feb. 13, Kim Jong-nam allegedly had met N. Korean diplomats three times in S. East Asia between January and early February of this year.

A report by Moon Sung-hui:

Attentions are drawn to sources on (N. Korea) related affairs who allege that Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of Chairman Kim Jong-un, met N. Korean diplomats before his assassination. The sources also mentioned that N. Korean diplomats personally delivered to him a letter from Kim Jong-un.

On Feb. 3, (our) source, a N. Korean official, said, "It is my understanding that Kim Jong-un ordered State Security Ministry to bring back to N. Korea Kim Jong-nam, who was staying overseas. Kim Jong-un's instruction was to persuade him to return voluntarily without making a fuss. "

Following his instruction, (officials from) the Ministry met Kim Jong-nam around Jan. 20 in Macau. Upon hearing Kim Jong-un's suggestion that he return to N. Korea, his answer was, "Give me time to think about it. Give me time," the source added.

This is from RFA Korean language broadcast. They report lots of N. Korean news allegedly from N. Korean sources. It is not clear how reliable their reports are. It is possible that they get news from entirely different sources who want to remain anonymous, and their news articles are more of intelligence, which could contain mere allegations, than fact-checked news. However, their article does have specific details this time.

The following is also from RFA. This is an English article carrying an interview with a Japanese journalist who used to have frequent contacts with Kim Jong-nam.

Interview: ‘I Feel Like These Possibilities Are Gone Because Kim Jong Nam Lost His Life’

2017-02-15

The suspected assassination of the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has helped thrust the secretive nation and its secretive first family back into the limelight. Kim Jong Nam died Feb. 13 en route to hospital after being attacked at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport in the Malaysian capital. Authorities in the U.S. and South Korea suspect that he was poisoned by two women on orders from Pyongyang. Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Un are both sons of former North Korean leader Kim Jong Il, who died in late 2011, but they had different mothers. Kim Jong Nam, the elder of the two, whose mother was an actress named Song Hye Rim, said his father kept his parents' relationship secret. Kim Jong Un, the youngest son, was born to another mistress, Ko Yong Hui. Japanese journalist Yoji Gomi, a former Tokyo Shimbun editor, got closer to Kim Jong Nam than most reporters. In 2012 he published the book: "My Father, Kim Jong Il, and I -- Kim Jong Nam's Confessions," based on interviews and about 150 emails he exchanged with Kim Jong Nam for seven years. Gomi recently talked to RFA journalist Jung Min Noh about the man whose apparent assassination has captured the world’s attention. An edited version of the interview translated by Soo Min Jo follows.

RFA: What did you think when you head Kim Jong Nam was dead?

YG: I felt shock and pity.

RFA: Do you think his half-brother gave an assassination order?

YG: Although Kim Jong Un’s approval of an assassination is possible, I think it is also possible that the regime’s high-ranking officials close to Kim Jong Un may have acted out of loyalty and internal competition. As you know, many of them are getting purged or dismissed, and Kim Jong Nam was still an influential person, so there is a possibility that the people who decided to get rid of Kim Jong Nam were afraid of Kim Jong Un.

RFA: While he was one of the only members of the family who criticized the North Korean government and argued for reforms, there are reports that he feared for his son Kim Hansol’s safety. Do you know if that’s true?

YG: I heard that Kim Jong Nam was not going to do interviews for a while because of possible situations with Kim Jong Nam’s son, Hansol, who was attending a university in France. I have been trying to contact him for five years, but I have been unable to connect with him. I have heard that Hansol is still in France. I heard that they got along really well and met often.

RFA: According to your research, Kim Jong Nam was viewed as a possible alternative to Kim Jong Ill. What does his death mean to North Koreans who might seek reform?

YG: Not only me, but other North Korean defectors whom I met in Japan, said something like this about Kim Jong Nam: “North Korea can change. There are people inside of North Korea who think that it is necessary for North Korea to reform and open up. That day will come someday.” Now, I feel like these possibilities are gone because Kim Jong Nam lost his life. I feel disappointment and regret. It breaks my heart.

He very likely pronounces the word as "brorher" so you are technically correct.

Malaysian police arrested another suspect. Somehow N. Koreans made things so easy for them. I am not sure that N. Koreans got so sloppy. So-called suspects may be duped into playing decoys, while the real hit was done by somebody else.

IGP: Another suspect detained in connection with N. Korean man’s death

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 16 ― Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar today confirmed that another woman was detained in connection with the death of a North Korean man by the name of Kim Chol.

An official statement on the arrest would be issued later today, he said when contacted by Bernama.

Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Noor Rashid Ibrahim, when contacted, said police were expected to make several more arrests following the arrest of the first suspect, a female, at the KL International Airport 2 yesterday.

The woman was in possession of a Socialist Republic of Vietnam travel document bearing the name of “Doan Thi Huong”, aged 29.

Last Monday, Kim Chol was reportedly at KLIA2 at 8am to board a flight to Macau an hour later.

Kim Chol reportedly died on the way to hospital.

Foreign media had reported that Kim Chol was actually Kim Jong-nam, an elder half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. ― Bernama

That was the last straw. Media reports said that he had some disagreements with his father Kim Jong-il over how N. Korea should be run. He leaned more to the open door policy while his father was adamant that N. Korea stay the course. So Kim Jong-il could have some misgivings about him even before the incident. Kim Jong-nam’s view was more in line with Jang Sung-taek, his uncle who was executed.

There is an allegation that she has Youtube Channel. The search of Youtube using her name shows that there is a Youtube video featuring a woman who may look like her, although it is far from clear that she is the one. Here is a link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZauK2b9wKM

We cannot rule out the possibility that she was duped into playing a decoy or distraction without knowing what the hell she was involved in. If she is an NK operative, she won't be turning up at the airport again when the place is swarming with police. However, we won't know the extent of her involvement until police investigation is complete.

Slain North Korean always had bodyguards in Malaysia, says friend

PETALING JAYA: The murdered Kim Jong-nam used to enjoy coming to Malaysia but always had bodyguards with him as he feared for his life, says a restaurant owner who knew him.

“I suspect he had a device to jam the CCTVs. Whenever I checked the cameras after he left, there would be nothing,” said Alex Hwang, a South Korean whose restaurant Jong-nam frequented.

“He feared being assassinated, hence he always travelled with bodyguards,” he said.

Hwang said Jong-nam would stay at five-star hotels whenever he was in town.

“Sometimes, he would bring his wife here,” he said, adding that Jong-nam had also brought his Singaporean girlfriend to Malaysia.

Hwang, who is the National Unification Advisory Council (Malaysia) chairman and former president of the Korean Association in Malaysia, said: “There are so many restaurants in town but he preferred Starhill Gallery because of the security there.”

He said Jong-nam would often travel to Singapore, Malaysia and Macau. “His family lives in Macau. His son is back in Macau from Europe.”

Hwang believed that Jong-nam was here this time because he had some business or associates here in Malaysia who could help him financially.

“He used to get financial aid from the North Korean embassy but not after his father died and he went into exile.

“He may have other financial sources here.

“I had tried persuading him to visit South Korea but he declined,” he said.

Hwang described the assassination of Jong-nam as an act of terror.

“It was done in a public place. They came to Malaysia to do such a terrible thing and we are now living in fear,” he said.

Another source said Jong-nam regularly visited between 2010 and 2013 when his cousin, Jang Yong-chol, was North Korea’s ambassador to Malaysia.

“Then, Jong-nam would stay at a double storey house at Bukit Damansara.

“He would stay here for between 10 and 15 days on each trip. Sometimes with his family,” said the source.

The source said Jong-nam was fond of the neighbourhood pubs in the Bukit Damansara commercial centre and the nightlife, party and club scene at Changkat Bukit Bintang.

Jong-nam stopped coming to Malaysia for a while after Yong-chol was recalled to Pyongyang in December 2013 and executed.

Yong-chol was the nephew of Jang Song-thaek, Jong-nam’s uncle.

Song-thaek and his entire family were executed on the orders of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The source said Jong-nam did not return to Malaysia for about a year but was sighted again in 2015 and 2016.

The source also said Jong-nam was involved in the IT business, distributing hardware and software to businesses in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia.

“He was aware that there would be attempts on his life and had on few occasions travelled to Kuala Lumpur with a bodyguard,” said the source.

Malaysiakini, a Malaysian newspaper, ran an article with interesting tidbits about the poison used to kill Kim Jong-nam:

The source declined to reveal the exact poison used but described it as "more potent than cyanide".

Fingerprint check confirmed that the dead man is Kim Jong-nam.

S.Korea: Fingerprints confirmed as Kim Jong Nam's

South Korean government officials say fingerprint checks show it's certain the man who died in Malaysia was Kim Jong Nam, half-brother of North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

The South Korean officials told NHK that the Malaysian government asked them on Tuesday to compare fingerprints taken from the body with those of Kim Jong Nam, which they hold. The officials said they confirmed the prints match.

On Monday, a man with North Korean citizenship fell ill at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. He died while being taken to a hospital.

South Korea's intelligence officials said on Wednesday that they believe he was killed with poison by agents of North Korea.

They also said the act was likely done with Kim Jong Un's approval.

Malaysian police are trying to determine the cause of the death and are interrogating a woman with a Vietnamese passport detained in connection with the suspected killing.

Reuters news agency quoted sources close to Malaysian government officials as saying North Korean officials opposed an autopsy on the body and requested its immediate handover. The sources said Malaysia rejected the request.
