Elizabeth Warren silenced on Senate floor after quoting Coretta Scott King

In a rare move, the Senate voted late Tuesday to silence Sen. Elizabeth Warren from speaking out against Sen. Jeff Sessions, President Trump’s nominee for attorney general.

The Republican-led Senate voted 49-43 to uphold a floor ruling that Warren (D-Mass.) violated Senate Rule 19 by “impugning” the character of Sessions during her lengthy speech against his confirmation. A separate vote to allow Warren to continue to speak failed — effectively silencing the outspoken progressive from continuing her anti-Sessions speech.

The dust-up on the Senate floor began shortly before 7 p.m. when Warren took the microphone to make a long, impassioned speech on why Sessions shouldn’t be confirmed as attorney general. She read from past statements from critics who successfully opposed his 1986 nomination for a federal judgeship over concerns he was racially insensitive.

She earned a warning by 7:20 p.m. from the presiding Senate leader — Montana Sen. Steve Daines — when she quoted Sen. Ted Kennedy as calling Sessions “a disgrace.” He reminded her of Rule 19, which says a senator shall not “impute” another senator’s conduct or motives.

Warren was permitted to continue, but got in hot water again for reading a 1986 letter from Coretta Scott King that opposed Sessions.

By 7:47 p.m., Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell interrupted Warren.

“The senator has impugned the motives and conduct of our colleague from Alabama, as warned by the chair,” McConnell said.

Of course, her motives are absolutely pure. Keeping minorities in chains is a noble cause, if you're a "progressive."

No, Elizabeth Warren was not silenced for quoting Mrs. King. She was silenced for violating Senate rules. There is no Senate rule against quoting Mrs. King.

Tie her up and gag her like Bobby Seale at the Chicago Eight trial.

I believe that’s precisely the narrative Liawatha was setting the stage for. We know they didn’t cite Rule 19 because of King, but the MSM will frame it that way. When she kept repeating, “I can’t quote Coretta Scott King?”, over and over again, you could tell it was a setup.

The folks in my office are all outraged that “They wouldn’t let her speak! Can you believe the evil??”

Sigh. The one downside to working in beautiful DC.

Interesting. Somebody is out after Elizabeth Warren. heh heh

I’m betting it is somebody with the initials HRC

First the polls showing she’s slipping and less popular than the MA R-Governor, and now this. Love it.

Wonder who gets paid to come up with these scenarios for the drama-queen Dems.

NBC has a story stating Warren was silenced for quoting CSKing. That is false. She was silenced for impugning the motives of another Senator...Rule 19. No mention of Rule 19 in the story, NBC tries to make it appear racist. I loathe them.

Liawatha doesn’t understand that the GOP did her a favor by preventing her from coming off as the deranged screeching crazy cat lady with the 15 concrete lawn ornaments and old car in the yard.

It has to do with Senate decorum rules concerning slandering another Senator on the Senate floor.

She broke the rule.

Don't you worry. If you and I see the truth, the truth is escaping. NBC has zero -- and I mean ZERO -- credibility any more.

The Post's cause-and-effect sleight of hand with the headline reminds me of the classic example of faulty logic communicated with true propositions: "Milton was a blind poet who wrote Paradise Lost; then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained."

The only thing that Mrs. King brings to the discussion is her willful blindness in the face of her husband’s many, many, many sexual affairs.

She has no moral high ground and should not be used as a finger-wagging talking point.
