19-year-old charged with murder in burglary shooting (Jacksonville, FL)

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 19-year-old has been charged with murder after a homeowner was shot and killed Monday afternoon when he interrupted a burglary at his home, police said.

Maleek Williams is also facing an armed burglary charge, police said.

Lt. Steve Gallaher said 50-year-old Kyle Simpson returned to his home on Native Dancer Court about 2:30 p.m. Monday and walked in on Williams and another man burglarizing his home.

Simpson's family and friends said he was a veteran of over 20 years in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

“It's so sad he can go to war, not get injured, but come home and get shot and left for dead," Simpson's nephew, Brandon Engle, said. "It blows me away.”

A neighborhood mail carrier told detectives that he saw Simpson open his garage door before he was met by two men coming out of the home.

Williams shot Simpson, and the two left him for dead and drove away in a 2010 black Ford Escape, Gallaher said.

Surveillance video from a neighbor's home showed what appeared to be the suspects' SUV leaving the home after the shooting.

Gallaher said the video provided key information that helped police track down the getaway vehicle, which was found late Monday night in front of Williams' home on Tory Place.

"The video was enormous," Gallaher said. "If more neighborhoods had some sort of video system for an entrance to capture tags and vehicles -- for a case like this, it was huge. That was what really got this going."

Detectives were able to pull the tag number of the SUV from the surveillance video, which helped them track the vehicle to the home on Tory Place.

Nice part of town, suburbs north of downtown by the airport. Lots of retired and active duty military. Unfortunately, the neighborhood high school gets a lot of kids bussed in from the 'hood who bring violence and crime.

What's strange about this perp is his complete lack of police record.

Anyhow, lives ruined all around.

I live up here and everyone was on edge all day until they were caught. Several homes were broken in to. Brazen daylight robberies. The cops say these kids have no fear of getting caught. They commit crimes in daylight, in front of security cameras, in front of police. They don't care. Cops suggest gun ownership and learning the laws around this.

At 19, all of his previous offenses may be sealed because of his having been a minor when he committed them.

get a rope.

It's Florida. He killed a man, a retired veteran, in his own home while committing a robbery.

He's never been arrested before and he'll never get arrested again. He's 19 and he's going to die in prison.

They don't seal them that well.

Someone gets convicted of committing murder during a burglary there shouldn’t be room for appeal. Execute them without recourse

The article does not say what happened to the other burglar. Shouldn’t he be charged as an accessory to murder??

This pisses me off beyond measure.

With that said, we live in crazy times folks. If you are not carrying a sidearm where ever the law allows - EVERYDAY - you should be EXPECTING the same to happen to you.
Good Luck to you unbelievers.

More “economic redistribution” by Sons of Obama.

Murder while armed and committing a felony is a death penalty offense (at least in a state that still has some judicial balls).

Let’s see the ACLU and BLM defend this bastard.

This guy already confessed and dimed out his accomplice. They're probably still working the second guy over.

It'll be an open and shut case. These two morons didn't even try to get away with it.

Most states he also gets murder 1 when he is caught. As a practical matter, he would most likely get a lesser sentence than the one who actually shot the victim, but that is not a 100% certainty.

Most places would charge the accomplice with capital murder because he was part of the crime which resulted in someone being killed.

That would also hold true if the homeowner had killed one of the thieves.

Rather nice neighborhood. Lately the thief do not settle for bad neighborhood anymore, they go for the good ones too, or especially.

I was blessed to be Kyles squad leader in 88-89 in Bremerhaven Germany. He was an outstanding young Military Policeman and Soldier.

Those that served with him are heartbroken and pissed beyond belief.

God help that 19 y/o turd if we ever get a hold of him.

I'm sorry for your loss. Believe me, there's a lot of us here who are pretty pissed off. This literally hit close to home. It could've been me coming home from work at that time. And I wouldn't have been armed driving home from work because I work on the Navy base where guns aren't permitted, even with CCW.

About 90% of Jacksonville's homicides happen in one zipcode; a "no-go" triangle-shaped area that the cops refer to as the "cease fire" zone. If you don't live there, you have no reason to venture there. As such, despite Jacksonville being pretty violent, most of us are insulated from the violence.

Sadly, the perception is this is starting to change. I live in a nice subdivision close to where this crime occurred. In fact, the burglars had previously broken into a house right down the street. It's a developing subdivision and until recently, we used to only have thefts at the vacant lots under construction. Thieves would steal appliances from empty homes and teens would check car handles for unlocked doors but now it's getting a lot more brazen. Doors being kicked in, home invasions, etc.

Stay locked and loaded.
