Trump supporters not welcome at elite Republican club

Members of a storied Manhattan Republican club were booted during a heated meeting at its Upper East Side headquarters — because of their support for President Trump, sources told The Post.

Tensions at the Metropolitan Republican Club on East 83rd Street — which counts state Republican Committee chief Ed Cox and former Mayor Mike Bloomberg as members — had been festering for months over Trump’s ascent to the presidency.

After his surprise victory in November, sources said, the club’s old guard launched a campaign to cleanse Trump supporters.

“They hate Donald Trump, and they were really pissed when he won,” said expelled executive board member Sandra Chase.

Club President Debbie Coughlin, former club President Peter Hein, Bob Morgan III and Ian Reilly colluded to boot Trump backers — and flagrantly violated longstanding bylaws in doing so, the sources allege. Dismissed members likened the move to a Soviet political purge.

Bloomberg is essentially a Democrat. So why is HE a member?

If this keeps up, there will soon be open discussion of a third party built around Donald Trump

This is why I have never been registered as a Republican.

I would never register for a political party that had a local club in Manhattan.

P.S. -- Donald Trump isn't a Republican, either. He just hijacked their nomination process to get on the national ticket as an independent.

More progressives posing as Republicans or conservatives.

I used to be a member of this group. They only put up losers for election. There were plenty of anti-abortion folks who did volunteer work for them - much to their disgust.

Sounds like the sort of environment in which George Will might fancy himself holding court.

Then they are not ‘real’ republicans and definitely not ‘real’ Americans.

Notable that there reportedly were Hillary supporters there too.

The Manhattan GOP is GOPe in the extreme.

Yes, their greatest sneers were reserved for the Staten Island Republicans—who tended to be anti-abortion.

Trump was a national fundraiser for Reagan. Understandably hated the Bushes, and is something of a paleo/libertarian mix philosophically.

Not really! More like yuppies - I remember the president was a attractive young woman who wore power shoulder pads (that’s how long ago it was!) but never talked to anyone who stuffed envelopes. But through them, I briefly met Reagan, Dan Quayle, George Bush, etc and went to one of the Reagan inauguration parties. So it served some purpose but they weren’t blue-bloods.
