.....Macy's, which is owned by Cincinnati-based holding company Macy's, Inc., reached its lowest "consumer perception score" in nearly a decade in the middle of January, following a dramatic drop right after New Year's Day....only 20 percent of consumers said they would consider shopping at the department store - down two percent from just two weeks earlier.

Hey, remember last year when Macy's decided to spit on half the country by publicly bashing Donald Trump?

I still do.

I haven’t been in a Macy’s for twenty years and there are several of them locally. Overpriced, low-qualty merchandise. Bubbye Macy’s! And based on their management’s behavior, Amazon is on our “do not use” list too!

They kept Ivanka’s line. They tried to have it both ways. That said: Malls are croaking. The minimum wage increases are hammering them. Their house brands are cr@p. Inventories are lousy. Macy’s needs an overhaul.

Aside from politics, Macy’s has a different problem.

Have you been in one of their stores recently?

It’s impossible to figure out the price on anything. There’s a price, a “sale price”, and sometimes and “at the register added discount.” And that’s not to mention the internet come-ons.

I think it’s supposed to build customer excitement, but I find it a huge turnoff. Anyone else notice this?

They bought up good local chains, and slapped on Macy’s name and managment, running them into the ground.

They would have been better off keeping the local labels with more decision making pushed down to the regional level. It is not clear that the chain can be saved at this point.

Macy’s stuff is over priced garbage.

The quality of the construction and materials in their clothes does NOT justify their exorbitant prices.

You can buy better quality clothes at better prices in many other places.

It’s so that you have to go to the register to have the item scanned in order to find out the real price. Then you are already at the register. Power of suggestion.

Macy’s isn’t the only store to do it.

They took over Hecht Co. in my area, which was a very good store, a DC institution for a very long time. I think I’ve been in the Macy’s twice since they took over, but have never bought anything there.

“”I haven’t been in a Macy’s for twenty years and there are several of them locally. Overpriced, low-qualty merchandise””

If you haven’t been in a Macy’s store for 20 years, how would you know what the quality or prices are of their merchandise? They have great quality in women’s clothing - absolutely beautiful quality women’s business suits for prices working people can afford and the same goes for their casual wear - tops and bottoms. My preferred place to shop...

Yeah, that’s the basic problem.

They stock almost nothing that you can’t find cheaper
at lots of other retailers.

Local managers in big retail companies tend not to have much autonomy. They are told what to stock, how much to stock, and precisely how to display it. God help you if you if you disobey. Then those store managers are held responsible for any bad decision making on the part of higher ups. Great gig, eh?

I noticed the same thing and it drives me crazy. Like being in the middle of a Chinese fire drill.
I believe that's the same (failed) philosophy that Penny's had a couple of years ago. Macy's still thinks it's a winner - like the Dems who can't/won't recognize that their policies have failed.

That’s why they call it “free enterprise.” But you might want to view some of the other responses to my posting. They don’t share your view on price vs. quality.

“”But you might want to view some of the other responses to my posting. They don’t share your view on price vs. quality.””

Then I guess I need to change my opinion, don’t I? Is that how it works? OR perhaps they’re like you and don’t even shop at Macy’s.

Yeah, that's why I ditched it two decades ago. Those higher-ups are among the absolute most arrogant people to ever walk the planet.

Yes, and they seem to only carry two sizes in men’s jackets. XXL, and SP.

I can understand the strategy as an occasional way to wring out a little extra, but as an every-day approach, I don’t like it. And, I think it’s counterproductive over the long term—it’s exactly the sort of thing that drives people to buy online from Amazon.
