A tax on imports will be paid by US consumers, not Mexico.

Only for the people who want to pay for product from Mexico. It is going to be a choice if indeed it comes down to it. I personally think this is just how Trump negotiates.

In this climate do you think any corporate leader in his right mind would open a plant in Mexico? Let me answer my own question: NO.

If you are going to expand, you will do in north of the Rio Grande.

The Peso is falling. There will be no investment. Mexico will soon be receiving thousands of criminals and others. They will be returning to a depressed economy. Remittances from the US are going to be dropping dramatically. There will be no more safety valve to unload criminals and excess labor. The president of Mexico will be going to Washington, hat in hand, soon or he will be facing a revolution.

Trump was extremely clear throughout his campaign, time and time again, that he WAS going to impose tariffs in the name of protecting American jobs.

People here on FR who voted for him should not be surprised that he’s now doing so.

America took a thirty-year test drive of laissez-faire free markets. They handed back the keys and said “No Sale”.

Can a company afford to raise its prices by 20% and still remain competitive?

They might raise the prices somewhat, but they will have to absorb much of that tax, or sales will go down.

>>Mexico has been getting away with murder.<<

If Mexico “has been getting away with murder,” then, yes, let’s re-negotiate NAFTA so that we are gaining as much as they are in any trade deal.

The important point to remember is that in a fair trade deal both sides gain. International trade is not a zero-sum game where one side loses and the other side gains. Both sides gain as each provides the goods and services it’s best at providing. Fair trade is win-win.

People, hopefully not including President Trump though, are losing sight of that fact, and it is a fact, not an opinion. Granted, one can be taken for a ride in any deal, but properly structured international trade is a benefit to all, just as cross-border trade between our 50 states benefits all of us.

The free traders will never agree. They won’t sign on to fair trade either.

Exactly!

What’s so hard to figure out here. We did exactly what you said, and now we have 90 million able bodied people out of work.

We’ve basically flat-lined on new jobs since 2000. I will admit that we don’t a bit better in the last few years. It’s still very anemic.

We are at least 45 million jobs behind where we should be right now, just from normal population growth.

Something has to be done.

We are seriously F-ing up our nation. We can’t afford anything these days. Infrastructure is crumbling. We can’t fund our military adequately. We are 45 million payroll tax payments each and ever month, behind.

Trump plans on getting people off welfare and back to work.

And then the ‘me oh my’ crowd shows up, and says, we’ll be paying more for everything.

We are paying a hell of a price right now, watching our nation go down the tubes, our families ravaged, our potential decimated.

THIS HAS TO STOP!

Well. When purchasing products from Mexico hits us where it
hurts; then MAYBE, just maybe we’ll buy MADE IN THE U.S.A.
items INSTEAD of cheap imports from ANYWHERE.

Of course not. Such a fools errand means the total destruction of the American economy.

Trump may use a snipers rifle for some specific items, like dumped steel or cement. Trump will not attempt to impose 20% across the board tariffs. He will not shotgun tariffs.

Unlike many fools here Trump has common sense

It is a fair debate as to whether or not handing back the keys was a wise decision, but the voters have done so.

Kraft Nabisco moved Oreo production to MX and had to realize at least a 20 pct margin uptick. But they didnt lower prices on the shelf. I bet plants like this will return to the US in due time.

Hold illegal border crossers for ransom.

$5,000 each in 24 hours or off to the Aleutians in Alaska for six months.

I’m skeptical about tariffs since it’s always been a lib thing, but maybe we could use a Mexico-only tariff as a test of sorts. Don’t pass any broader tariffs until we see the results of the Mexico one.

No we aren’t; but quit tooting the Hillary Horn so loudly.
Give Trump a chance. Hitler-y lost. Cruz lost. Bush lost.
Get over it.

Bingo. But as long as people feel that the Mexicans are paying for it, they'll gladly (and stupidly) hand over the money.
