NEW YORK (AP) Nielsen estimates 31 million viewers watched TV coverage of President Donald Trumps inauguration on Friday.
That audience total, measuring continuous coverage by 12 broadcast and cable networks, soundly beat the 20.6 million who viewed President Barack Obamas second inauguration in 2013. But a presidents second swearing-in typically logs a drop-off in viewership. Obamas first inauguration in 2009 was seen by 37.8 million people.
Fox News Channel was by far the most-watched network of all, cable or broadcast, with 8.43 million viewers. Cable rivals CNN had 2.46 million and MSNBC had 1.35 million.
NBC was the most-watched broadcast network with 5.8 million viewers, followed by ABC (4.9 million) and CBS (4.6 million).

I am most people watched it on social media live.
I *and* most peolpe watched it live on social media (not tv).
Me too!
At one point, the RSBN stream had just over 171k viewers.
I don’t recall whether that was at the swearing in or the parade or fireworks at the Lincoln Memorial.
All in all, RSBN did a great service throughout this election season.
Streamed it live!
Easily double the figure, yes its the MSM evasion, i had to go to Youtube for the FACTS. The MSM tried oh so very hard to water down, poo poo the event, and to make a constant subtle intonation of a funeral procession.
With live internet streaming, he blew away 40 million!! And there were at least 1 million there at the mall. The media is lying again.
Also more people would have gone to the inauguration but the rumors of riots kept them away.
I watched it on C-Span for the most part.
Rest of the time was on FOX Business News
I bounced around, but I watched most of it on the same station as you. Lou Dobbs was so excited about Trump, and he had on enthusiastic guests. Very enjoyable.
I would have watched it on a link through Free Republic, but as you know, it was down and out.
Which doesn’t take into account the millions more with the ability/desire to live stream who did not 8 years ago
...
Yep, and lot of Trump supporters like to do that rather than watch the enemedia.
I listened to it on Sirius radio, cheering on down the highway!
I hung my flag out for the first time in eight years.
Oh Happy Day!
We have a legitimate Constitutional President again!
Why is there a competition anyway? There are lots of reasons why attendance can fluctuate. I wouldn’t be surprised if a certain percentage of people were afraid to bring their families due to all the threats made by protestors to ruin the inauguration.
During the live coverage, one narrator commented that the reason some of the bleachers were partially empty was because they couldn’t make it through to that area.
Even some of the Bikers for Trump said they were held up for 2 hours trying to get in.
“I wouldnt be surprised if a certain percentage of people were afraid to bring their families due to all the threats made by protestors to ruin the inauguration.”
I know a member of the National Guard who went to support the innauguration. His fiance was petrified with worry. So some undoubtedly stayed away out of fear.
This is what I did.
I am grateful the weather for the most part was tolerable and the event went smoothly. The protesters and media snarks were expected bumps in the road. The tv audience seems about average. All is good.
I watched it on line because I didn’t want to hear the media yapping the whole time. I watched the pre inauguration on line as well.
My guess is this is the most-watched inauguration in American history. I don’t even have a television hooked to an antenna. My wife & I watched the inauguration on Facebook, live, as did millions of others. Add social media, FoxNews.com, cnn.com, and other news websites (like Right Side Media) to the Neilsens, and I think we probably had 50 million watching.
