The Army says former private Chelsea Manning will lose her military healthcare benefits despite President Obamas commutation of her prison sentence.
If Pvt. Manning is discharged with a dishonorable discharge, she will lose her entitlement to [military] benefits, including gender-transition care at [military] medical treatment facilities, Army spokeswoman Cynthia Smith told USA Today Wednesday.
Smith said Mannings dishonorable discharge was included in the terms of the 35-year prison sentence imposed on her in 2013.
Manning was convicted of leaking classified information about U.S. national security activities that were later publicly disclosed by WikiLeaks.
Smith said Manning could appeal her discharge determination, noting a failed appeal would ultimately result in dishonorable discharge from the Army.
Manning would also be barred from Veterans Affairs (VA) Department benefits under that status, Smith added.
The Army has been providing Manning with treatment for gender dysphoria, USA Today said, including hormone treatments.
Manning was also a candidate for gender-reassignment surgery, it continued, which would have been paid for under the Pentagons new policy for transgender troops.
USA Today added the VA, meanwhile, has also provided treatment to veterans struggling with gender dysphoria for several years.
Manning had already served seven years of her prison sentence when the White House announced Obamas commutation Tuesday.
The former solider was originally scheduled for release in 2045 and will now regain her freedom on May 17, 2017 instead.
Obama defended his decision Wednesday, meanwhile, noting he is satisfied with the severity of Mannings punishment so far.
It has been my view given that she went to trial, that due process was carried out, that she took responsibility for her crime, he said during his final press conference as president.
[It is] that the sentence that she received was very disproportionate relative to what other leakers had received and that she had served a significant amount of time, that it made sense to commute and not pardon her sentence, Obama added. "I feel very comfortable that justice has been served.
Manning, who was initially serving the longest sentence ever imposed for a leak conviction, tried committing suicide twice during her incarceration.
No taxpayer funded chopmydicktomy? Darn the bad luck.
She can always go rob a bank in California and get those bennies back
Well, I guess there IS a bright side to this situation. S/he will most likely not make it far on the outside.
But, seriously? 7 years served of a 35 year sentence for ESPIONAGE and 0bama thinks that JUSTICE has been done?
Whatever. So GLAD this POS will be GONE in LESS THAN TWO DAYS!
And a dishonorable discharge is the equivalent of a serious felony conviction IIRC. So finding a job could be problematic, unless some loopy leftist hires him.

Once HE is free, nothing to stop him.
Mazeltov on your next attempt mr. manning.
Gender reassignment surgery should take a few minutes in the kitchen.
I agree, and in my view both 0bama and Manning are traitors.
Job? Are you kidding? He’ll be the darling of the talk show circuit and will likely have a “reality” show soon.
I can’t take any article seriously that refers to Manning as “her”.
“HE” ... we shouldn’t even accept the perversion of language and concept that the damnable cultural Marxists insist.
They, the perverts and all these nut job transgenders should be mocked and called out ... not coddled to pwotect theiw widdle feewings....
Bump...I hold volunteers who help society in the highest regard.
I guess there is justice after all.
I’m hoping that there’s somebody out there who will put these high-profile pukes that Obama pardoned, out of our misery. Manning appears to have a self-destructive personality, so I don’t expect he’ll be around too much longer anyway. No vagina for you Manning!
i am sure’he will appeal.
Manning will set up a GoFundMe page, no doubt.
I think “gender transition care” would be convincing him not to do it.
