Shutdown of coal plants raised electricity rates, failed to reduce pollution: Report

Ontario’s hell-bent determination to phase out coal-fired generation raised electricity rates without significantly improving air pollution levels, a new Fraser Institute report says.

Report co-author Ross McKitrick, an economics professor at the University of Guelph, said the findings should act as a cautionary tale for Alberta and Ottawa currently going down the same road.

Even though there was reliable information available at the time that showed Ontario coal was not a big player in common air pollution ingredients, the political agenda made it impossible to discuss less expensive options to full closure, he said.

“They just demonized it up and down — made it impossible to even have the conversation,” added McKitrick. “They turned it into a really dirty word and that had the effect of shutting down the whole discussion even before it began which, of course, led to a lot of really bad decision making ... The lessons translate directly over to Alberta.”

Ontario closed its last coal plant in 2014, and made it illegal to open any more.

The most significant closures were the Lambton and Nanticoke stations which represented 25% of the province’s total supply of electricity.

Coal fired power plants are already under such draconian environmental controls that their contribution to pollution is negligible

No kidding... you mean when the supply of a product or service is reduced, without an equally priced alternative, the price will rise even when demand stays the same? This is a complete and total shock...

Oh, but the AGW crowd doesn’t really care about pollution in the here and now. They care about the climate a couple of hundred years from now, when everybody will be dead from freezing to death because of no electricity...............

[[An Ontario auditor report noted that between 2003-14, the province eliminated 7,546 MW of electricity generation from coal and added 13,595 MW of new capacity — mostly wind, natural gas and nuclear power.

During that time period, Ontario electricity consumers saw the commodity portion of their bill rise by 80%, the auditor found.]]

80% rise in cost and meanwhile their politicians got rich investing in “green energy” they forced the people that elected them to buy.

They need to tar and feather their politicians.

Not to mention all the jobs it cost.
And not to mention that Brazil, Mexico, China, India and every single 2nd World Economy is going to burn the stuff no matter what.

Obama the tyrant knew exactly what he was doing.

Modern coal plants are clean, and can be made cleaner and more cost efficient. The only thing standing in the way? Regulations. The technology is here, but is unreachable, due to current law and regulation.

What a complet economic waste! If coal is so bad, then phase the coal plants out after their useful economic life cycle, only 30 years or so. Not going to affect the earth.

The purpose was to raise rates!
Higher costs also raise the extra fees that are tacked onto your bill to pay for gov’t employee pensions.

“And not to mention that Brazil, Mexico, China, India and every single 2nd World Economy is going to burn the stuff no matter what.”

The goal all along has been economic - drive the cost up in the US and other developed nations, while enabling the 2nd and 3rd world countries to keep their costs low - little or no limitations on their use of coal, technology provided to them (limit or deny patent enforcement in developing countries and otherwise enable their use of technology that cost billions to develop for free or very little).

Exactly.

I read that Obama's State Department just gave the UN Climate Change Thugs, $500 million of taxpayers money. That's on top of another $500 million sent earlier. Obama had promised $3 billion total.

My question has always been, what in the hell are they going to do with that money? Plant trees? Line the global elites pockets with kickbacks to Obama?

Oops! I think I just stumbled upon the answer to my own question....

Use LNG as fuel for generating electricity. Very clean burning fuel.

That’s all they is line their with the scams they up with.

They come up with a scam and get a friend or family member to company which they invest in and steal the money the people they represent by forcing them to pay scam.

It’s why so many lawyers what a job in politics.
Our congress is full of them . They get elected and have no money and a few years later they are loaded their insider trading and scamming us.
What’s is we have to pay them for the rest of their lives for ripping us off even if they don’t get reelected . We let them vote that scam in too.
