Trump Threatens German Car Makers With 35 Percent Tax
The Daily Caller ^ | Robert Donachie

President-elect Donald Trump threatened German car makers with a big border tax of 35 percent for cars imported into the U.S.

Trump criticized German auto makers like BMW and Volkswagen for producing the majority of their vehicles in Germany, not the United States. “You can build cars for the United States, but for every car that comes to the USA, you will pay a 35 percent tax,” Trump told German newspaper Bild. If the German firms decide to build factories in Mexico and plan to sell cars to the U.S., “without a 35 percent tax, you can forget that,” Trump told reporters.

German automakers have substantial investments in Mexico. BMW announced a $2.2 billion plant in central Mexico that will open in 2019, where it would produce the BMW 3 Series. Another German car company, Volkswagen, opened a $1.3 billion facility in Mexico last year for its Audi division. Even Mercedes-Benz has plans to move part of its operations to Mexico by 2018.

I do not favor high tariffs, generally.
But Mr. Trump is right to try to restore some of the jobs Obama and Company have driven out of USA, we need jobs!!!!!!

and I am betting that most of the companies WILL cooperate with DJT, too

I saw a new Mercedes SUV the other day. Ugly as hell. Trying to compete with Land Rover.

No more free rides.

America is a big automotive market.

Build in the US for the US market or you will be forced to compete on a level playing field with car companies who do.

My Mom has the 2013 Mercedes E Class, when we went to the dealership they had some models that said majority of the parts were made in Mexico, she did not want that car..cars made in Mexico are not reliable, at least the ones she has dealt with, so car she has is made in Germany(With a few parts made in other places but its majority German built) it would be great for Mercedes to have a plant here in America as well as other car dealers

The Germans are doing so they can charge Americans less on the sticker. It is for the children. I am sure the Krauts aren't going to pocket the windfall by using 3rd world beaner stoop labor. /sarcasm

Do the same with Big Pharma. Use the Sherman Act to break them up.

The GL-class SUVs and the C-class sedan Mercedes are assembled in Alabama. I don’t know the domestic parts content of these models.

Mercedes already has a plant in the USA - Vance, Alabama to be specific. They make most of their SUVs and the C-class there.
