A town once unrivaled by the likes of Savannah, Charleston, Natchez, etc.
To your question; I don’t honestly think I have to answer.

“To your question; I don’t honestly think I have to answer.”

It would probably be unwise.

Yes; the last of the white, Congressional “blue dog” Democrats in Georgia (John Barrow) was finally gerrymandered out of his district a couple of years ago.

When that district was created in 2002, a Republican, Max Burns, initially won it (it was, curiously, designed to elect a Black Democrat when the Dem legislature and Dem Governor overplayed their hand at trying to draw a Dem federal majority). Barrow lucked out by narrowly beating Burns in 2004. Burns would’ve won it back in ‘06 had it not been for a toxic anti-GOP environment. Barrow actually survived the redistricting in 2012, but the national anti-Dem climate in 2014 is what finally did him in.

In 1960-70, Selma was a majority-White city of 30,000, the 13th largest in the state. Today, it has around 19,000 (now the 29th largest), and has been mostly depopulated of Whites, who made up only 18% in 2010 (29% in 2000), likely lower than that 7 years hence. Its saving grace is its history and historic sites.

The GOP-dominated Georgia legislature tried to gerrymander Barrow out of his seat twice. Each time he foiled them. They finally succeeded the third time. I know the Barrow family well, but I am only a very casual acquaintance of John’s.
