Dangerous, potentially destructive ice storm looms for 1,000-mile swath of central US

People from Texas to Ohio are bracing for a dangerous long-duration ice storm that could turn destructive and cut power to hundreds of thousands from Friday to Sunday.

A shallow layer of cold air in the atmosphere will accompany a storm over the central United States. The storm will produce a swath of freezing rain along a 1,000-mile swath.

As the chilled rain falls on cold surfaces, it will freeze into a thin glaze of ice at first. The transparent and slippery nature of the ice will be a great hazard for motorists and pedestrians.

Who’s laughing now liberals!?!?!? You made fun of us paranoid preppers.

No joke... I’ve mentioned before I travel a lot and have a consulting gig in Germany. I stayed longer than I thought on one trip, and my bill autopay card was expired, and came back home with no water and gas. I was comfy as could be hooking up my stored propane tanks and heating up water from my storage tanks. That’s what prepping does for you.

It’s the Ying and the Yang man. Short term El Niño atmosphere energy meets long term polar cooling. Hopefully it won’t be too bad.

It’s been a mild winter so far.

With nothing else to be hysterical about byt Trump, the media NEEDS to hype a short-lasting ice storm, like those that we get EVERY SINGLE YEAR, for ratings.

Yeah it will suck.
Yeah some people will lose power.
Yes, some fools will go out driving on the ice and get killed.
IT HAPPENS EVERY SINGLE YEAR...

The odd thing....

Is that with today’s modern technology, almost everyone has instantaneous access to the latest in weather information with their cell phone or home computer. We have umpteen million WEATHER PEOPLE and channels dedicated to weather 24/7.

And yet many are not prepared.

Disagree. It’s been colder than Huma Abedin here in Ohio.

Prayers for everyone in its path!

It’s been above freezing here but today will be super cold, every thing will be a sheet of ice.

Slipped and fell on our rural driveway last year and broke my arm.

As I get older, seriously thinking about moving somewhere warm. It’s frightening. I still don’t have full range of motion in my arm and it still hurts.

Stay safe, everyone!

We just had one Tuesday night.

It was 28 and raining after a prolonged COLD snap.

My windshield was icing up as I was driving. I had to put the defroster on full blast to warm it up and melt it.

And no, I am not one of those idiots who goes out in it. I was out when it started and had to get home and had to drive into it to get there. It started several hours earlier than expected.

Fortunately, no damage which surprised me as it was VERY, EXCEEDINGLY windy

Ditto on the prayers! We were in 2009’s big ice storm, and that was a couple weeks of “H” for us. Luckily the power to my shop comes in from a different line than the house, and between the two, we had partial power most of the time, plus a small kerosene heater, and a small (4.5 kw) generator that I was able to snag 3(?) days after the precip. stopped. I spent a lot of that 2 weeks swapping heavy extension cords around, as power would keep going out on one feed and come up on the other. But, there were still people just up the road from us still running generators 3 weeks after the event began. And, it was dang cold that 1st week. About the only “positive” is that most structures do not sustain severe damage.

The worst of this looks to be a bit north of us, but, dang, I see the Topeka, Kansas NWS office expecting an inch or more of ice in some areas. If it occurs, that will be devastating!

The silver lining is that it appears that in the areas hardest hit, temps will be sufficient to melt the ice by Monday. (We had no such “luck” in 2009.)

It may be mild where you are, but where I am it has been unseasonably and unreasonably COLD! We are used to having a few DAYS of sub-freezing weather a couple of times through the winter.

We are now approaching our 20th day of (to us) extreme cold. The thermometer has not gone more than 4 degrees above freezing in the day for nearly 20 days here. Nights are 8 to 14 degrees colder.

Up until 2 days ago we had a North wind that was seriously BITING, so chilling that the dogs didn’t want to stay outside AT ALL. The cat, the one that is constantly trying to sneak out actually BEGGED to be let back in.

It’s blastedly COLD here. The humidity is FINALLY under 40% outside, but sheesh, I wish the rain would come back, and I HATE rain!

Before the “you don’t know what cold is” crowd pipes up, I was in Edmonton for Christmas, and it was 25 below. That was NOT as BONE CHILLINGLY cold as it has been here. At least you can dress against the dry prairie cold. The coastal humid EEEEEEVIL cold is a whole different animal.

Enjoy your mild winter. Cold sucks!

Better go check your generators and make sure they work. Get the old gas out and a couple cans of new gas ready.

Harbor Freight’s 7000/8750 generators are pretty good and inexpensive.

Thank you for the posts! Ice storms are devastating.

Glad you have a generator. That is the one investment we should have made, because without power, we don’t even have water (on a well).

We do have a large, spring-fed pond, though.

Things will be fine.

I just hope people living in areas that normally don’t get this kind of weather are okay.

Take care, FRiend!
