He was probably recommended by Trump’s generals and admirals, who will be working with Trump to clean up what Obama has left.

For all the nay sayers, remember that the Intel Chief does not have to be a spook himself. He is an administrator. I don’t know Coats but I doubt he would be picked if not smart, clever, straight arrow and loyal. He’ll figure it out and clean it up.

He served as head of the Intelligence committee while in congress. At one point Russia banned him from coming to Russia. He is an expert in Russian Intligence

I think this department is going to go away. Coats will be there to evaluate who will remain employed and be transferred to where they can do the most good and who are political hacks and need to be removed.

Coats is a smart guy

Coats was on the Defense Committee during his first stint in the Senate in the 1990s. He was reportedly W’s second choice for Secretary of Defense after Rumsfeld.

He was chair of the Senate Sekect Committee on Intelligence during his most recent term in the Senate which just ended. Unlike most Congressional committees, the Intelligence committees only have two members from each party, he was basically one of the Republican’s top two experts on the intelligence community in the Senate.

He was also Ambassador to Germany from 2001 through 2005, so he knows Germany well. Merkel, who wants to open Europe to mass Muslim immigration and wants to turn the EU into an undemocratic autocracy, is one of the key problem children who Trump will have to deal with.

A close relationship with Pence is just another plus.

It would be hard to find a better pick.

We’re draining the swamp, remember? After all we’ve seen and heard from the FBI, CIA, NSA and the rest, can you honestly tell us that someone in a top level position in any of those agencies is fit to be the DNI?

Coats has a good resume, is a well-educated and experienced professional who seems to be honest and well respected. That’s enough of a qualification in my book, it’s not like the DNI has to teach spycraft or speak 12 languages or anything, that’s what we have experts for.

Plus, as a Senator who spent years being lied to by Clapper, Coats is likely to be acutely aware of the politicization of intelligence, and the constitutional checks and balances to which the intelligence agencies need to be forced to adhere.

Actually, he was elected three times to the Senate, in 1990 (to serve the last two years of VP Quayle’s term), in 1992, and then again in 2010. He voluntarily chose not to run for what would have been an easy reelection in 2016. So he is a rare Congresscritter who chose to term-limit himself.

He served on the intelligence committee in the Senate. Was a GW Bush finalist for SecDef.

Whatever else he is, he’s clearly qualified for the position.
