Filibuster This: Democrats Pay A Huge Price For Gutting The Senate's Supermajority Rule

Rules: You have to laugh at the Democrats' current plight. They have almost no leverage to block anyone Donald Trump decides to select for judgeships or cabinet posts. They can't stop Republicans from repealing most of ObamaCare. And they only have themselves to blame.

On CNN this week, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer was lamenting the fact that Democrats wouldn't be able to use the filibuster to stop Trump's nominees.

There should, he said, be "60 votes because on such important positions there should be some degree of bipartisanship."

And who, exactly, is to blame for this? Schumer's predecessor in the Senate's leadership ranks, Harry Reid, who in 2013 eliminated the filibuster for presidential appointments, except to Supreme Court.

Reid did it for short-term political reasons — he wanted to let Obama quickly pack the lower courts with liberal judges...

...all boils down to is that Democrats are now suffering the consequences of their own shortsighted hubris. When they didn't need GOP support in Obama's first two years in office, they didn't lift a finger to get it. And when they did need GOP support, they changed the Senate rules so they no longer would.

Apparently it never occurred to Senate Democrats that they might someday lose control of that chamber, as well as the White House, leaving them largely unable to stop Republicans from undoing what they thought they'd achieved.

There's a good word for that:

Filibuster is undemocratic. One of those obsolete Senate traditions that died an unlamented death.

Democrats didn’t care about minority rights when they ran the show. Turnabout is fair play.

Republicans can quickly eliminate the filibuster for SCOTUS nominations and Democrats don’t have a leg to stand on.

That’s what political expediency does over adherence to principle.

Now its easier to get the conservative agenda passed into law without Democrats gumming up the works.

Frankly, the depraved stupidity of the Dumbocrats-—this is just one perfect example of many-—never ceases to amaze me.

Having the half-caste Moron in the Oval Office gave Reid and the rest of ‘em the **lls to refigure the Senate votes. Stupidly thinking they were IN forever, the Dumbos killed the filibuster.

You’d think putting Reid and Pelosi out there as their leaders was the ultimate stupidity......but the Dumbos compounded their stupidity by nominating Hillary for President.

I agree. The filibuster is extra-constitutional.

In the article about Harry Reid -- who in 2013 eliminated the filibuster for presidential appointments, except to Supreme Court

Elena Kagan is the most recent appointee and that in 2010. Rest assured that Reid would have included SCOTUS judges if he had had one to appoint.

Reid was the Senate Majority leader from Jan 2007 to Jan 2015.

GOP needs to change filibuster on supreme Court. The Dems would change it on day one if back in power.

LAUGH BREAK: Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer whined, "there should be 60 votes because on such important positions (as the courts and the Cabinet) there should be some degree of bipartisanship."

Say what? The Dumbos once enjoyed their jack-booted lock-stepping in the Senate. I guess Charlie is p!ssed b/c he gave away his vintage brown shirt and arm band.

Question for the experts: Did the Democrats get rid of all filibusters or just the modern fake filibuster? Could someone still do an old school filibuster where they take over the podium and read the phonebook and have aids bring them food etc? In other words a REAL filibuster?

BS. It was a necessary brake on the government. Both sides are going to suffer from it. We aren’t a democracy remember?
We’re supposed to be a limited constitutional federal republic.

We have not been a limited government republic since the passage of the 17th Amendment. This article is just more proof of the unit party and why the 17th Amendment needs to go away ASAP

If the Dims keep up the streak they’ve been on recently, they may steal away the Republicans’ title as “The Stupid Party.”

...except to Supreme Court

The MSM is really pushing this steaming pile of BS. Harry Reid used the term "judicial," which doesn't stop at the Court of Appeals.

There should, he said, be "60 votes because on such important positions there should be some degree of bipartisanship."

It's funny isn't it? DJT should only nominate candidates who the democrats will support so that they can have "bipartisan' support. Of course that would make them completely unacceptable to the people who elected DJT.

I remember in 2008 that Chuckie was singing a different tune...with a backup chorus of GOP sellouts...claiming that the man elected President ought to be able to chose whomever he wants and Congress should simply respect the results of the election. What changed?(rhetorical question that doesn't require the effort to push "Reply")
