Too true. And I'm talking the beat level cops.
The pay scale is WAY disproportionate between the upper ranks and the ones in the line of fire.
Columbia SC - the starting pay is ridiculous. Like around 35K per year.
And as other posters have noted. These guys and gals are dealing with the dreck of society.

You take away the badge and the gun, you can up the pay but you're not going to get more recruits if they know they won't be receiving them going in. Wages have been in decline for decades. Nobody gets paid enough. Most of us don’t lash out by breaking the things we are trusted to care for in our jobs—except teachers and cops.
