You are welcome.

Remembering Christmas Eve at my Italian grandparents. I can still smell the spaghetti sauce and sfingi (fried dough). Oh and of course the sounds as my dad, gramp and uncles played cards at the kitchen table. It was kind of scary when young and not understanding the language. Loud, indeed. Miss it.

I miss the simple Christmas Eve service in our little country church. Went with friends to their church service last year and left empty. Few hymn, little Bible readings. No passing of the light (candles). Balloons with glow sticks just didn’t move me. All the music was on a screen with rock accompaniment. Just wasn’t spiritual for me
Will stay up and watch a service on TV later.

Merry Christmas to our new friend on the Trump Train Transition Group!

so many memories and things we took for granted as young people. sad.

very quiet at hotel right now. Going to warm up some homemade alfredo. I made it for my friends while I was out of town. Added large shrimp to theirs. THEY LOVED IT. Never had anything except bottled. Of course, quite a difference.

Will have some sliced tomatoes on the side and a couple Clementines for dessert. After work and midnight church service.. wine.. I work til midnight and tomorrow 9AM to 9 PM.

Silent Night - it is here .. and mild weather... and the Browns won (breaking our perfect season) how embarrassing for the Chargers.. feel sorry for them

Balloons with glow sticks? That wouldn’t impress me either.

...sfingi?

We knew it as "strufoli."

1 cup flour
2 eggs
1 jar honey
1/2 cup sugar
oil (for frying)
1 tbsp lard

Beat the eggs. Sift the flour on a breadboard. Make a well, and pour in the egg mixture. Knead the dough until it is smooth and stiff – about 15 minutes. If the dough seems moist and sticky, add flour. If it is too dry, add a little egg white. Knead a thin and narrow loaf of dough.

Let the dough rest by putting it under a bowl on the board for 20 minutes. Knead the dough again, and then let it rest for another 10 minutes.

Cut the dough into four strips lengthwise, and cube it width-wise into little pieces.

Heat a quart of oil in a deep fryer, and add the lard. The oil must be hot, about 390 degrees. Fry the little cubes until they are golden, but not dark. Remove with a ladle, and place in a paper bag to absorb the oil.

Heat the honey and sugar until the mixture is noticeably less viscous, but not boiling. Turn off the heat, and dump all the little cubes into the honey, turning them constantly until the mixture gets hard.

Take large, flat dish, and place a drinking glass in the middle, upside down. Spoon the strufoli and honey mixture into the dish, and build a wreath around the glass. When finished, remove the glass. Wet your hands, and shape the wreath. With a clean cloth, remove the excess honey from the edges. Cover with wax paper.

The awe of a magical Christmas when I was a young girl...

Going for long rides to see the beautiful lights.

Going to various family to deliver gifts and eat treats.

Helping Mom on Christmas day by setting the dining room table with the fine China and Sterling Silver.

All the family together for a wonderful meal, opening of gifts, and hours of card playing by the olders as the Grand Mothers played games with us.

Never wanted the day to end.

So thankful for all the good memories of youth.

Christmas day at maternal grandparents was very special. I chopped the cabbage for cabbage salad with one of these.

I was crafty as a kid so made a CHRISTMAS Tree (once out of feathers another couple out of pine cones.). Dad would always say I bet Mrs_____ would enjoy that. We would take the tree with some fruit to her.
Brighten her last days

Dad also would give me a stack of his bills. I would draw a little Christmas holly or ornament and write “paid in full” in green and “Merry Christmas” under it in red.

It wasn’t until hearing a sermon the CHRISTMAS after dad pass away, that it hit me the giving at Christmas in old time represented the gift from God of forgiveness of debts and sharing of self. He had demonstrated the lesson to me year after year and I finally understood.

I have it now. Works well. Push down and twist. Push down and twist. I like it better than my electric chopper.

Wonderful times. I pray future children will have the same. We didn’t have much, but we had it all.
