DAMASCUS, December 7. /TASS/. About 3,000 militants surrendered and were granted safe passage in the town of Khan al-Sheikh [Khan al-Shih in other sources] on the outskirts of the Syrian capital Damascus, a TASS correspondent reported from the scene.

The militants and their families boarded 52 buses that will transport them to the Idlib province.

"After long and difficult negotiations, a ceasefire agreement with the militants was reached. The talks were very tense and required a lot of moral effort," a spokesman for Russia’s reconciliation center in Syria, Col. Alexei Leshchenko said.

The militants handed over more than 500 guns, as well as sniper rifles and dozens of 120-mm mortars.

Militants and their...families?

Since when do terrorists take the wife and kids along?

And isn’t this a prelude to these ‘families’ being granted refugee status to infest some Western country?

Well, if there're so many of them, in thousands, then they are unlikely suicide bombers.

Depends of the country policy. Once there are no hostilities under Assad the country can kick the applicants back to participate in post-war rebuilding.

Taking the family along is common practice for some of these guys. There have been drone strikes in Afghanistan and Pakistan where family members were present.

It seems to me this entire Syrian fiasco was started as a cute way to deprive the Russians of there only port in the Med.

Another take would be that the true Syrian patriots were those defending their once peaceful and westernized country from the rabble that Obama raised against the government during his failed Arab Spring movement.

I am not knowledgeable of the situations in the ME, but someone said on a thread yesterday that Obamao stirred up the whole Syrian war because of wanting to run an oil pipeline in the area.
