While the unemployment rate dropped and the economy added another 178,000 jobs, the number of Americans out of the labor force hit a record high last month.
According to the Labor Department, 95,055,000 Americans were out of workforce in November, meaning they were neither employed nor had made an effort to find work over the previous month.
The level of Americans outside of the workforce last month due to retirement, education, discouragement, or otherwise represented a substantial 446,000 increase over the month of October.

Unemployment is at 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 PERCENT!!!!
Of the 179,000 jobs created, only 9,000 were full time jobs. That is HORRENDOUS!!! You will not see that number in the Democrat media headlines.
All of the “statisticians” in the corrupt dept of labor need firing Asap. What idiotic lunatics and incompetents. They actually believe that the rest of us believe their lunacy. I happily would like the unemployment rate to rise...if was them who were unemployed. Really...such liars and incompetents.
I wonder how many are people that just retired?
Cavuto opened his show with that fake news and immediately changes the subject to the Labor Participation Rate.
Addendum to the previous post. The fake news I was referring to was the unemployment rate.
So we have a 4.6% unemployment. Trump is going to have to CHANGE this parameter or way of reporting when he comes into office. To put 96,000,000 people back to work, he would have to have a negative 26% unemployment starting point! This is a BOGUS number and he’s going to have to point that out.
Hunt them down and shame them.
There are more people not working than live in France.
An analyst at the Federal Reserve has written that 80% of the decline since 2012 is due to retirement. And also he wrote that 65% of the decline since 2000 is due to both retirement and disability.
But, I think this overlooks that a lot of the retirements and disability claims are desperation responses to losing a job in your 60's or even late 50's.
It’s no secret that Americans discouraged from the workforce is a big problem, but why the sudden jump this month?
I wonder how much of the surge was due to illegal aliens deciding not to file anymore paperwork (such as unemployment filings) with the government. Or being selected for termination for the job cuts that did come.
I’m one of them. I had the opportunity to retire early and I took it.
Every one of the people counted as “out of the workforce” is “employed” as far as the “unemployment” statistics are concerned.
The problem has mushroomed drastically ever since Trump took office. Uh...a month and a half from now...wait, I know, all those people quit out of despair because Hillary lost the election...yeah, that’s the ticket...
I’ll be getting out in a couple of months. Time is worth more than money to me.
71 million of the 95 million are children.
We have 300 million for our entire population.
These people really love alarmist statements.
Tried to get population statistics on the 300+ citizens by age. Not successful - but the median age is 38.
Let’s estimate that
75 million are children under 18
75 million are retired or disabled
100 million are working full or part-time
That leaves 50 million who are not working.
