Cuban refugee Alberto Gutierrez sent me a message saying that Forbes had reported that Fidel Castro was the 12th richest man in the world. I asked for a precise source. He replies “In July 1997 Forbes magazine published an article about the super rich people, Castro included. Later on a Cuban radio station of Miami also broadcast other details related to his wealth, and somehow I mixed up all the information I had gathered on the subject. Actually, according to Forbes, Castro is not the 12th richest man of the world. In a list of rulers he merely occupies the 7th place with a of fortune of $1.4 billion”. I am still not convinced, and I ask Alberto Gutiérrez to e-mail me the exact text of the article. If it is true, then Castro loses all credibility. If it is untrue, the story should be exposed as a wild attempt to discredit Castro. Is the Miami radio station the US-supported Radio Martì?
