Cuban exiles pour onto Miami streets to celebrate Fidel Castro’s death

... Cubans with flags of Cuba and the US together with hundreds... spilling into the streets of Miami.....at the news of the death of the leader and the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro 90 years old, who died Nov. 25, 2016.

Fidel Castro died, and Cuban Miami did what it does in times of community celebration: It poured onto the streets of Little Havana — and Hialeah, and Kendall — to honk horns, bang pans, and set off more than a few fireworks, saved for exactly the sort of unexpected special occasion that proved worthy of their detonation.

The scene across Miami..., the cradle of the Cuban exile community, was one of pure, raw emotion. This time, after decades of false alarms, Castro’s death was real. “I wish my dad was here to see this,”.... Wearing an “I love Hialeah” T-shirt, he stood.... where police quickly set up watch posts to make sure impromptu revelers stayed safe.

“Beautiful madness,”....describ[ed] the scene.

Passing cars honked incessantly. People waved huge Cuban flags. Parents carried their children and puppies. A few people appeared clad in pajamas and, in one case, flamingo slippers, jolted out of bed — by the late-night news. Shortly after midnight, Cuban leader Raúl Castro announced on state television, his voice trembling, that his older brother had died at 10:29 p.m.

“Toward victory, always!” he said. The streets in Havana, where a nine-day mourning period was announced, appeared to remain quiet.

Not so in Miami, the city across the Florida Straits shaped by exiles who fled Fidel Castro’s 1959 revolution. Calle Ocho was completely shut down to traffic to accommodate the elated crowds gathered at Versailles Cuban restaurant, the iconic exile hangout, to cheer and wave signs .......[snip]

Indeed, they will party. In January 2007, Miami's Cuban elected officials began a series of meetings with Little Havana's Orange Bowl stadium committee to plan a massive party to celebrate Fidel Castro's death. At the time, Castro was gravely ill and his death was expected to come quickly. This event was to include commemorative T-shirts, a catchy slogan and "bands that will make your hips shake." It was to be a celebration of the end of communism—whether or not that is triggered by Castro’s death—as opposed to a large-scale tap-dancing session on someone’s grave. Some compared it to the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Orange Bowl was a bittersweet landmark in South Florida’s Cuban-American experience. After the 1961 Bay of Pigs fiasco, more than 35,000 exiles gathered there to hear President John F. Kennedy promise a free Cuba. Decades later, the bowl served as a camp for Mariel refugees.

The Cuban exile community has been waiting for decade to party. Unfortunately the city fathers tore down the Orange Bowl. The replacement venue- Hard Rock- holds zero of the magic or historic meaning of the Orange Bowl but still has ties to the Cuban-American community.

Since the U of Miami Hurricanes are playing today at the "Hard Rock Stadium" in Miramar, that place will be rocking since many Cuban-Americans will be in attendance.

There are dozens of Youtube videos popping up showing hundreds of people swarming into the streets. It is a matter of time before they organize one real big party!

In January 2007 ...

I started practicing Cuban cooking in order to celebrate Fidel's presumed-to-be-imminent demise. What a long time it has been!

The difference is that this time the Cuban government has stated it officially. The previous times were best guesses made by observers.

Don' care much for the song but it's appropriate today.

There's a party goin' on right here
A celebration to last throughout the years
So bring your good times and your laughter too
We gonna celebrate your party with you

Come on now, celebration
Let's all celebrate and have a good time
Celebration
We gonna celebrate and have a good time

It's time to come together
It's up to you, what's your pleasure?
Everyone around the world come on!

Yahoo!
It's a celebration

The Pope grieves:

Pope Francis said in a message delivered in Spanish to Fidel Castro’s brother and current Cuban President Raul Castro that the death of the long-time Cuban dictator was “sad news.”

“I express to you my sentiments of grief,” added the pope, who met Fidel Castro when he visited Cuba last year. Castro, 90, was a self-professed atheist who was baptized as a Catholic.
