Do they require a degree or is profitability enough?

Profitability is all that matters. I have worked with good traders with no degree and bad traders with PhDs.

When a new trader starts he has no track record. It goes case by case but one could expect to be fired if they are not profitable within three months to a year. Someone with a good track record will usually not be fired until after the second year of losses. Hedge funds usually have a lower tolerance for losses than banks.
