A survey has suggested that two-thirds of the public believe businesses have a right to decline orders which conflict with their religious beliefs
The general public have indicated that they believe business owners should not face legal action for declining customer requests which conflict with their religious beliefs.
A survey conducted by ComRes of 2,000 adults showed that 65 per cent of participants believed that Christian bakers who decline to produce a cake bearing the words “support gay marriage” should not be taken to court.
In 2014 Northern Ireland bakery Ashers refused to take an order for a cake bearing that slogan because of the owners’ Christian beliefs. The owners, Daniel and Amy McArthur, were taken to court for breaching equality laws and last month Belfast’s appeal court upheld the legal ruling against them.
However, the case could now be heard in the Supreme Court, the highest court in the UK, after Northern Ireland’s Attorney General John Larkin said he intends to refer the case to it.
The survey also revealed showed support for a Muslim printer’s freedom to choose not to print a cartoon of the prophet Muhammad (68 per cent), a Catholic printer’s freedom to decline to print pro-choice adverts (63 per cent) and an atheist web designer’s decision not to create a website about creationism (70 per cent).
The survey was conducted on behalf of the Coalition for Marriage and took place on November 4, 2016. Dr Sharon James, a spokesman for the Coalition for Marriage described the results as “a real eye-opener”.
“It shows that the majority of people believe that businessmen and women who hold religious or philosophical beliefs should not face being sued for declining to provide services that promote the views of those they fundamentally disagree with,” she said.
“The fact that they are being sued – and losing – shows that laws protecting free speech and freedom of religion need to be reviewed. They are failing to protect people from legal action for simply holding traditional beliefs, or unconventional and challenging views. The law – or its interpretation – is out of step with mainstream public opinion, which embraces diversity, dissent and debate.”
So does America but with Bammy and Soros in charge with his LGBT rights group, Human Rights Campaign activists, the bakers never had a chance. They were targeted just like tons of other Christian businesses but they’ll never admit it.

America came from Great Britain. To a significant extent, they share our values. The recent election was mainly about values and in particular the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The left reached too far, trusting their twin weapons of fraud and demographics. What they discovered instead is that more than enough people value freedom of speech and were disgusted by "hate speech" laws, speech codes, and political correctness.
What they discovered instead is that enough people value privacy, not the abortion "privacy" of the penumbra, but the real privacy guaranteed in the Fourth Amendment, and were disgusted by the systematic and warrantless federal government intrusions on our lives.
What they discovered instead is that (just barely) enough people value limited government and were disgusted by the jackboots ignoring the Ninth and Tenth Amendments and the enumerated powers.
What they discovered instead is that freedom is still alive, and it's what keep the American people alive. Perhaps even the British will join us!
Has there ever been a request to a Muslim bakery to do the same? Wonder how they would react.
And if a Muslim cabbie refuses to pick up a female fare, or a fare with a service dog, should the cabbie be able to get away with that.. ?
Still I wonder how 1/3 of the population believes that businesses should be forced to do any business they would rather opt out of.

If they own the business and can stay in business - yes.
They may own the business, but are licensed by gov’t. That gov’t license comes with some obligations. If you’re unwilling to meet those obligations, whether you’re a bakery, a pharmacist, or a cabbie, you should find a new line of work.
If you own a pharmacy and don't want to dispense abortion pills, why does a pharmacist license change things?

If you want an abortion pill, buy from someone else! If you want a homosexual pride cake, buy it from someone else! You don't have the right to force me to bow down to your assault on my religious beliefs.
