It broke down in the Panama Canal run by the Chinese (an internet fact or just plain fact had you read the story) and is being repaired in one of their yards according to some.

As I said before, go do your homework instead of posting what you heard ‘according to some’ ....
“It broke down in the Panama Canal run by the Chinese (an internet fact or just plain fact had you read the story)”
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is an autonomous legal entity of the Republic of Panama, established under public law, established under Title XIV of the National Constitution with exclusive charge of the operation, administration, management, preservation, maintenance, and modernization of the Canal, as well as its activities and related services, pursuant to legal and constitutional regulations in force, so that the Canal may operate in a safe, continuous, efficient, and profitable manner.
“and is being repaired in one of their yards according to some.”
PSA Singapore.
RN had one break down just today; being towed back to Plymouth at last report.
The M-4 Sherman was actually better than most German tanks when it was introduced on the battlefield in 1942. Unfortunately, Hitler had both the Panther and Tiger redy to enter service and when they appeared, Sherman losses mounted.
My late father was NCOIC of a tank retriever platoon in the 3rd Armored Division; he was also trained as a mechanic and when his men weren’t pulling damaged Shermans off the battlefield, they worked to put them back in service. In fact, the real secret to the M-4’s success wasn’t just the number produced, it was the fact we were very adept at providing the material needed to return them to combat, and getting it to men like my father.
The 3rd Armored landed in France in late June 1944 with 232 M-4s. Over the next 11 months, they lost more than 700 in combat, a cumulative loss rate of 600%. Yet, many of those Shermans lived to fight again another day, thanks to our superiority in logistics and maintenance. German tanks were technological marvels (by comparison), but they had mechanical issues and the Wermacht would literally write-off a Panther or Tiger with more than moderate damage.
A note about training: during the Battle of the Bulge, we were so short of tank crews that infantry replacements arriving at Antwerp were pressed into service in armored units. Some of the new tankers went into combat with just one day of training. You can imagine what their life expectancy was in combat.
As for the F-22, the Air Force wanted just over 400. Former SecDef Robert Gates capped production at 187. There has been talk about reopening the F-22 production line under Trump; the airframe and engines are proven, and the sensor suite would be upgraded. We really need those extra Raptors.
Yep.
He who owns the battlefield at the end of the shooting owns the equipment on the battlefield.
At one time, I think the Isreali armor units were mostly made up of recycled Arab tanks.
I’ve heard the GI nickname for the Sherman was ‘Ronson’, after the cigaret lighter. “It lights first time, every time”.
Sounds like me and my weapons stash.
The Zumwalt class ships are the seagoing equivalent of the F-35.
Secy of Defense Ash Carter, Secy of Navy Mabus and Vice Admiral Nora Tyson (didn’t know we had a female V.A. for a combat ship), but they are probably more the reasons for the failures and breakdowns than just any mechanical problems.
When I hear the names Halsey, McCain, Zumwalt, then I’ll smile again.
It will become, again, the U.S. Navy, not the “Queens Navy”.
At 14,000 tons, the USS Zumwalt is the size of a World War 1 era battleship or a late World War 2 heavy cruiser
That was the British nickname for it, after the leading brand of cigarette lighters in the UK.
Actually, the Brits developed an improved Sherman (called the Firefly) with a 76.2 mm main gun (17 pounder). It was, arguably, the best anti-tank gun developed by the western allies and with an armor-piercing round, could knock out most German tanks, except Tigers/King Tigers with the thickest armor. By the end of the war, about half of all British Shermans were actually “Firefies.”
Sorting out should never have included a trip through the Canal, controlled by the Chinese.
They Germans called the M4 Sherman a “Tommy Lighter”. One strike and Tommies (British) burn
And has how many guns? How many torpedo tubes?
I heard it
Now that’s one heck of a picture. The Fletcher class was truly a weapon of war. I recently toured the USS The Sullivans at her berth in Buffalo. Inspiring is all I have to say.
As for the Zumwalt ... it just looks wrong. Aegis-class and Spruance-class ... they at least looked like efficient fighting ships. Zumwalt is a slab-sided monstrosity.
Yes,...ramming speed!
The Panther PzMk V Achilles heal was it's weak transmission. The old joke was if you could avoid detection by a Mk V for 4 days you were in the clear because it would break down by then and need repairs.
