O'Hare workers to strike on nationwide 'Day of Disruption'

A strike by hourly workers at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago will add another dimension to a nationwide day of protests by fast-food employees who have been pushing for a $15 hourly wage and union rights, organizers said Monday.

The attention-grabbing airport strike is "going to cause complete disruption in travel plans for the day and maybe days to come," said Kendall Fells, national organizing director of the Fight for $15 campaign. "Four decades ago, airport jobs were jobs you could live off of. Now airport jobs are just like fast-food jobs. We're all standing together."

The Service Employees International Union announced Monday that hundreds of workers will strike that day at O'Hare, one of the nation's busiest airports. The union has helped fund and staff the Fight for $15 campaign.

O'Hare is the only airport where workers plan to strike, though organizers are planning protests at airports in 18 other cities, including Boston, Washington, D.C., Denver, Atlanta, Seattle and Los Angeles.

About 500 O'Hare workers committed to a strike after a vote last week. They are trying to organize with SEIU Local 1's help. They work for private contractors at the airport and include baggage handlers, cabin cleaners, janitors and wheelchair attendants. Organizers said it will be up to workers to decide whether the strike will last longer than one day.

Some holiday travelers are nervous, however. Kim Maguire, 40, of Crystal Lake, was at O'Hare on Monday with her 3-year-old daughter and husband as they headed out for a holiday trip to see relatives in Seattle, with a return flight scheduled on the strike date.

They should be careful lest the market find ways to punish them.

They should have at it. Always fun to watch how business moves, closes down fires people because of people who have no stake in it have nothing better to do than cause problems.

A smart GOP should already be creating these ads and linking them to the Democrat party.

They want to see airport biz become ever more mechanized, they by all means should keep this up.

People no longer expect to see the personal touch here.

I could see something to augment something like Amtrak, in fact. People might not mind a slowish trip if it could be something like a party, the ultimate personal touch.

Hello, railroads? What’s old is new again?

The reason these jobs are paying minimum wage is they are largely staffed by a flood of recent immigrants that are willing to work for those wages.

If the market wasn't flooded with supply, the demand would push up wages to get more people to work.

Of course, if you are working for minimum wage for longer than 2-3 years, perhaps you should consider why. If no one will pay more than minimum wage for your services, perhaps your services aren't worth more than that.

Rather than going home and watching TV, invest your spare time in yourself -- learning a skill that is in demand.

Busiest weekend of the year. What better time to go on strike?

My grandfather had fond memories of strikes.

More specifically, he had fond memories of applying baseball bats to various sensitive portions of strikers’ anatomy.

Yeah right! I decided to take Amtrak from Oakland to Los Angeles a couple of years ago. Nice trip so long as you are not too near death because it takes 12 hours! You can fly it in an hour and drive it in six. Amtrak is the rolling equivalent of the Post Office!

The right already hates them, we have nothing to lose, they now will go on to make Democrats loathe them, it’s all good.

But what was going on in that train car. Everybody grimly frowning at everybody else, just caring about “when are we gonna get there.”

It would take something that transcends Amtrak-think to come up with such a thing. But why can’t we get something like a riverboat atmosphere (with or without gambling) rolling on the rails?

Four decades ago, airport jobs were jobs you could live off of...

And four decades ago colleges did not have to provide safe spaces for crybullies, and many or most Democrat politicians were not America-hating Communists (at least not in public), and America was the world leader in manufacturing, and, and, and...

Exactly, and President Trump should take immediate steps to make certain they do not get one dime in government handouts.
