Political philosophers define a “crisis” as that condition in which the symbol systems – political, social, cultural, ideological – by which we create order in a chaotic world no longer work effectively, thus rendering our lives incoherent. When you are unable to make sense of your life, when it gets harder and harder to function purposefully, well, you have a crisis.
Judging by the reactions to Donald Trump’s victory over Hillary Clinton in the American presidential election, a lot of people are in crisis mode. Liberal women report bouts of weeping, saying his victory is “like a gut punch.” They need “space to mourn Clinton’s loss.” Pundits would have you believe pitchfork pogroms against illegal aliens are about to break out across the country. Trump is held responsible for every swastika sprayed on a wall and every slur uttered against a Muslim while his election is blamed on “white extremism.”
Nearly 62 million Americans not only voted for Trump despite his well-publicized failings, but also rejected a Democratic Senate, House and state governorships. This result cannot be dismissed with ideological sneers. The fact is, many whites who voted for Trump this time also voted for President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012.
Indeed, Trump’s support was nation-wide and demographically diverse. Forty-five per cent of college-educated white women voted for the Republican candidate. So did 30 per cent of Latino and Asian voters. The U.S. electoral maps show a sea of Republic red with islands of Democratic blue largely confined to heavily populated urban centres on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.
So why – against most every poll prediction – did Trump prevail? Perhaps the paroxysms of rage and resentment we’ve seen since the election offer a clue...

I sure don’t remember conservative people having meltdowns and needing therapy dogs and play doh sessions and all that, when Obama won two elections. Liberals seem especially prone to meltdowns when things don’t go their way.
I don’t mind their despair. Let them wallow in it.

The founders did not intend to make the King of Thailand (born here) or Winston Churchill (American mother) or Anwar Al-Alawki (born here) and every anchor baby eligible to be President.
The term is restrictive to protect the Presidency from foreign influence. The letter from John Jay to Washington spelling that out still exists.
