Are the Patriots becoming the official football team of Donald Trump?
Certainly seems that way, given that hardly a day goes by without another high-profile member of the Patriots family being tethered to our president-elect. Related Articles Patriots defense knows it must toughen up: We obviously have more pride than that Patriots Notebook: The idea of starting isnt a foreign concept to tight end Martellus Bennett Patriots mailbag: Which AFC West team poses the greatest threat in playoffs?
First, it was the quarterback, Tom Brady.
Then, it was the coach, Bill Belichick.
Now, its the owner, Robert Kraft, who is knocking on Trumps door in this case literally. Papa Kraft was seen at presidential minicamp the other day, joining the parade of lords, potentates and other high-rollers whove made pilgrimages to Trump Tower to offer congrats, or advice, or a resume.
Kraft certainly doesnt need a job, given his array of business interests one of them being that he and his family own one of the most successful franchises in the NFL. I think hes safe.
But and call me crazy here is Robert Kraft up for an ambassadorship? What a cool way for Kraft to ride off into the sunset: Do a handoff of the franchise to son Jonathan and then embark on a tour as ambassador of Israel, Spain or the Court of St. Jamess. In the latter scenario, Kraft and Elton John would rule Great Britain.
Brady. Belichick. Kraft. Trump. Call it a marriage or bumper stickers: The Patriot Way and Make America Great Again.
And for those of you who would prefer that we not talk politics on these here sports pages, lets get something clear: Its Brady, Belichick and Kraft who make this news with their very public throw-ins with Trump.
It was at a pre-Election Day rally in New Hampshire that Trump disclosed he received a call from Brady, saying that the quarterback told him, I support you, youre my friend and I voted for you.
As for Belichick, Trump proceeded to read a letter from the Pats coach, the details of which are as follows:
Donald, Congratulations on a tremendous campaign!! You have dealt with an unbelievably slanted & negative media & have come out of it beautifully. You have proved to be the ultimate competitor and fighter!! Your leadership is amazing!! I have always had tremendous respect for you, but the toughness & perseverance you have displayed over the past year is remarkable. Hopefully, tomorrows election results will give you the opportunity to Make America Great Again!! Best wishes for great results tomorrow, Bill Belichick.
(Im still having a difficult time believing Belichick can find the exclamation point on a keyboard. Tell me Im wrong.)
As everyone now knows, Brady and Belichick have back-tracked on Trump. Brady, when asked why he gave Trump permission to use his name at the rally, replied, So youre assuming I gave permission?
Huh?
His wife, model Gisele Bündchen posted, NO! on Instagram in response to a question as to whether the couple supported Trump. And Brady wont confirm that he voted for Trump.
Belichick says he wrote the letter but adds it wasnt political, which of course it was. He says he did it out of friendship. And while a growing number or coaches and players are talking publicly about their Trump concerns, Belichick went with the Seattle-Seattle-Seattle soft shoe. Sorry, I cant help but feel Belichick was badly played by the Trump people on this one, which is why hes running away from it.
And Kraft? His son Jonathan went on the radio and said the family made no presidential endorsement . . . and then the ambassador shows up at Trump Tower.
For the one-millionth time: Its OK for Brady, Belichick and Kraft to support Donald Trump. And that support can take the form of a letter, a shout-out, a cap in a locker, a vote, a visit to Trump Tower . . . whatever they want. We should all defend to the death their right to make these endorsements. (And hopefully do a better job of it than Belichicks on-field defenders did against Seattle, Seattle, Seattle.)
But Brady, Belichick and Kraft are public figures. In their chosen professions they are just about the best at what they do Brady is perhaps the greatest quarterback of all time, and Belichick, regarded as a genius by so many, may well be the greatest coach of all time. And Kraft is the local fan who took a teetering franchise and turned it into a colossus. In this respect they all will wind up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Their words have weight. They shouldnt dance around those words.
Theyre Trump supporters.
Fine.
Just dont pretend otherwise.
Maybe he can get Trump to ask Putin to get his Super Bowl ring back.
Jonathan Kraft is a republican supporter. He held a big fundraiser for Romney when he ran.
Robert Kraft’s late wife was a big democrat. I doubt Robert is political, Trump is his friend.
Doesn’t shock me in the least. Patriots are americas team so obviously they’d be trumps team. God bless the United States, trump family and the Patriots!
The whole Brady/Belichick/Trump thing is the Liberal press making mountains out of far less than mole hills.
Why is it that when someone expresses an opinion counter to their twisted ideology they go off the rails and start spewing hatred?
Disliked the Patriots for a long time - have reset that meter and give them the nod. Will even forgive Brady for “inflategate” and call his suspension restitution in full.
Amazing when celebrities/athletes support a Republican. They are tarred and feathered. But when they support a Dem it is glorified. Such garbage.
By the way, the Herald is the right wing rag in Boston. The writer, Buckley, famously came out of the closet a few years back - and is a big lib.
LeBron James suffers no consequences when endorsing Hillary. The same holds true for Mark Cuban and Greg Popovich. The reason why the Trump spporters are reluctant to make their views known is the reaction of the MSM who use it to demonize them.
I am not a Patriots fan in the least. But I was most impressed with Gronkowski’s admiration of the hit that gave him a punctured lung. He called it a good clean hit and real football. That is a man and a gentleman, and one of the greatest tight ends to ever play the game.
The Cowboys will prove who is [still] America’s team when they nail the Patriots to the wall in the next Super Bowl.
I thought the Herald was the conservative counterpart to the Globe. But then I don’t live in [shudder] Boston.
They used to be but they’ve slowly followed in the footsteps of the Globe. There are exceptions like Howie Carr who writes for them. But mainly, not so much. Especially in their Sports department. In fact, I had a friend who was an editor in that department and I think that is where the ‘taint’ started.
