Flynn had been DIA Director, which required a way different skill set than DOD Secretary. NSC or CIA Director are a better fit for him. I’ve only just started reading his book with Michael Ledeen.

By law, a general officer of the military cannot serve as Secretary of Defense until he has been retired for at least seven years.

The object is to maintain the tradition of civilian control of the military (evidently, Congress believes it takes seven years for a military guy to become a civilian).

His boss is also a loose cannon. GOOD. I like people who speak their mind, especially when controversial. The nice thing about Trump is that he won't give a damn what the media or John McCain might say against a future Flynn "off-color" remark about Muslims, for example. Flynn's job will remain solid
