TOKYO (AP) Japan's leader will likely seek reassurances that President-elect Donald Trump remains committed to the U.S.-Japan security alliance when the two meet in New York on Thursday.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to meet the incoming president on Thursday. It will be Trump's first meeting with a world leader since his election last week.
Statements made by Trump during the campaign have caused consternation in many world capitals, including Tokyo.
Trump said he would demand that allies such as Japan and South Korea contribute more to the cost of basing U.S. troops in their countries.

I bet Trump doesn’t bow.
He might do it out of respect, but never as a mark of submission.
Will the Donald bow? Man, it feels good to have an alpha male leader in office.
But he might spin the Vapor’s “I think I’m Turning Japanese” in honor of his esteemed oriental visitor.
Have other presidents met with world leaders before inauguration?
Abe will present Trump with a mountain of data that will purport to show the huge amounts that Japan already pays to be the beneficiary of the American security umbrella and just how beneficial current trade agreements with Japan are beneficial for America. The Japanese are terrified that Trump intends to actually hold them accountable. Trump should listen politely, say little then with the legendary grand gesture of the Romans simply wave his hand laterally. Abe will get the message and know what is expected and will ultimately be done.
Can they not write a single article about President-elect Trump without a negative slant? I have never seen anything like the treatment they are giving Trump for anyone else after winning an election. Not even Reagan was treated this bad.
>> Have other presidents met with world leaders before inauguration?
No kidding... it’s seems like the World is eager to move on.
100%. Right, there is nary a single article without negative slants. Every single one of them. 18 months of this and counting. It’s going to be a fight all the way.
Oh boy. The whole swamp of the global order needs to be drained — not just Washington.
Oh boy. The whole swamp of the global order needs to be drained — not just Washington.
All these world leaders are calling Trump or meeting him right off the bat.
In Greece riots against Obama.
1....he will not wear a watch....The Japanese think that American business men are very time conscious and clock watchers.....so they tend to prognosticate during negotiations....so not wearing a watch will discombobulate them.
2...he will respond in Japanese with "Ha"
which means "I heard you"...(but I don't necessarily agree).
(Spokeshave in a previous existence successfully negotiated several contracts ....single handed...with Japanese companies)
Then there is Trump's own words on negotiating with the Japanese:
From the "Art of the Deal" paper back edition page 185 published in 1987:
"I have great respect for the Japanese, but they are very difficult to deal with. For starters, they come to see you in groups of six or eight or even twelve, so you have to convince them all to make a deal. You may succeed with one or two or three, but 12 is more difficult."
Comes Trump with (2016 - 1987) = 29 years experience since...
so how many great deals he has negotiated since 1987?.
Meeting and entertaining world leaders In their own home before the inaugeration?
Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen of Denmark CALLS TRUMP and tells him that Denmark IS GOING TO INCREASE DEFENSE SPENDING
OMG...dims heads exploding all over.
The TRUMP effect!
They can, but they will not. Ever. Just get used to the idea and continue to point out their biases and inaccuracies while heaping as much scorn and ridicule on them as you are able.
No kidding! World leaders calling, meeting, immediately after the election. Amazing! Never seen anything like it.
Wow!!!
