I have a relative who traveled to the Olympics one year, before the Iron Curtain fell - it must have been Sarajevo.

She went to an art gallery (she was someone who had gotten her degree in art and architecture) and said that it was one of the most depressing ‘art’ experiences of her life - no beauty, nothing uplifting, everything pedestrian, dull, dark. She also said that all of the natives she encountered seemed to be chain-smokers, and/or drunk.

There was no real *inspiration* in the lives of the people.

In her first performance in Edinburgh 1973,[10] Abramovic explored elements of ritual and gesture. Making use of twenty knives and two tape recorders, the artist played the Russian game, in which rhythmic knife jabs are aimed between the splayed fingers of one's hand. Each time she cut herself, she would pick up a new knife from the row of twenty she had set up, and record the operation. After cutting herself twenty times, she replayed the tape, listened to the sounds, and tried to repeat the same movements, attempting to replicate the mistakes, merging past and present.
