We most certainly have impeached Presidents before. Andrew Johnson was impeached and so was Bill Clinton.
Impeachment does not necessarily result in removal from office; it is only a legal statement of charges, parallel to an indictment in criminal law. The Senate still has to convict. WJC was impeached for perjury and obstruction of justice. The Senate did not convict him (something about them having no balls, I believe).

Impeachment is a nonstarter without Senate Democrats on board to vote to remove the Wicked Witch from office. Would they turn on her? Even if she was removed from office, we would end up with President Tim “Stabby The Clown” Kaine.
