Pre-election polls indicated the race would be close. Averaging five conducted just prior to the election, the Independence Party (a eurosceptic soft-libertarian party) was supposed to edge the Pirate Party (an anti-establishment party) by only 5 points. Instead, the Independence Party beat the Pirate Party by 15. The Pirate Party and the center and left-of-center parties had announced an intention to form a ruling coalition that would resume negotiations to join the European Union. So, the election turned into a little Brexit vote. I suspect that the Independence Party will be able to form a ruling coalition with the two other free-market parties that qualified for parliament.

Isn’t Iceland supposed to be the most literate nation on the planet?

According to Wikipedia, Iceland hasn’t reported literacy statistics to UNESCO.

Looks like the Pirate Party’s gain in seats came out at the Progressive’s expense. Seems people there want their leftism more anarchist than totalitarian.

Quite a few very high income countries have stopped tracking adult illiteracy.

Periodically, I form a scale of intelligence for the countries of the world from three underlying measurement:

[a] adult illiteracy [good for distinguishing among countries at the bottom],
[b] scores on internationally-standardized exams [good for distinguishing among countries from the middle to the top], and
[c] number of Nobel Prize winners in the sciences [good for distinguishing among countries at the top].

I include Nobel Prize winners because, in a free society, we should be anxious for the development of all of us. This includes a basic education for all. A large and prosperous middle class. And also the opportunity for the most gifted among us - whether in science, artistic expression, in leadership, wisdom or compassion - to bless us with the talent God has given them. In a free society, we do not need to level everyone to “the average.” We accept that God has made us each uniquely whom we are, that there is dignity in each of us, and that our good works, whether large or small, are acceptable because we are sanctified by the God’s grace.

There was an article on the Pirate Party yesterday. If you read between the lines, they are basically a bunch of REAL Fascists, trying to disguise themselves as populists to achieve political power (similar to the left in this country, but even worse). Thankfully the people of Iceland have better things to do other than throw away their very successful country.

Unlike this country, they actually send corrupt banker TO JAIL - if only for a few years, but still these ‘bankers’ have to find a new line of work.

Words like “progressive” often mean different things in the politics of different countries. In Iceland, the Progressive Party is an agrarian and populist-type center-right party.

It has, over the years, evolved from a center party to a center-right party. Formerly, it sometimes joined with left-of-center parties to form a government, and sometimes with right-of-center parties. Nowadays, it is firmly center-right. For a time, it joined with the center-left in being open to joining the EU. Today, it is definitely opposed to EU membership.

Interesting analysis.

I agree: a successful society should make it possible for people to flourish according to their individual gifts.

As a conservative, I am suspicious of left-anarchist movements, whether Occupy Wall Street in this country (remember them?) or Podemos in Spain or Syriza in Greece. Just the idea that there is an easy answer to the problems of the world kind of scares me. We are fallen creatures and should always be suspicious of each other and of ourselves as well. There are no easy solutions, but with work and patience, we can have an increasingly better life. Since they gave the Nobel Prize in literature to Bob Dylan, perhaps they should give one to Hugh Laurie for his Dylan-like “Protest Song:”

Iceland had it’s election

Background, the party of the outgoing Prime Minster (Progessive) got hit with a scandal and so they called the election early (they had till April), which was certain to decimate them. I guess that’s how they roll in Iceland.

The results

32 Seats needed for a majority (63 seats in total)

Independence Party (the Good guys) 21 seats (+2)

Left-Green ( pure evil but eurospectic) 10 seats (+3)

Pirate Party (Weirdo Quasi Leftist “anti-establishment”) 10 seats (+7)

Progressive Party (Agrarian Centrists) 8 seats (-11)

Viðreisn (Revival in English, a pro-EU breakaway faction of the Independence Party, Center-right) 7 seats (+7)

Bright Future (Ironic name for EU loving Libs, Center/Center-Left) 4 seats -2

Social Democrats (Main Leftist party till recently, lol) 3 seats (-6)

The results are a disappointment for the Pirates, polls had them LEADING by a wide margin until their numbers collapsed in the final weeks of the campaign, and they ended up finishing third (tied for 2nd in seats)

Whatever you have heard about them, like how “anti-establishment” they are, these are clearly not good people. They are idiot liberals who wouldn’t know what to do if they won power. They are present in several countries, in Germany in 2011 they busted onto the scene in local elections in Berlin winning 15 seats (only 5th place but impressive for such a group). They floundered in office and were wiped out in the next election. Then one of their “stars” murdered his gay lover, stayed with the corpse a few days and even took it outside, before killing himself.

A government of Independence/Progressive/Viðreisn seems likely, but Viðreisn is for the EU while the other 2 are not.

The Pirates want a Leninist Coalition of everyone but the 2 parties of the outgoing government (Prog-Ind)
