As a young, idealistic Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi in the 1960s, travel writer Paul Theroux, moved by the evidence of misrule he saw everywhere around him, got involved in a plot to assassinate Malawian Prime Minister Hastings Banda. Essentially because of that experience, he now wants Obama to pardon John Walker Lindh, the Marin County Mujahid who was captured in late 2001 fighting against American troops for the Taliban.
There are several important reasons why Theroux’s case is not analogous to Lindh’s.
1. Theroux did not commit treason. Lindh did. He wasn’t charged with it, but he should have been. He was fighting against American troops on behalf of an enemy force. If that isn’t treason, what is?
2. Theroux says that he got into the plot because “the country was badly governed, and I felt the rebels would have provided wiser leadership and free elections.” John Walker Lindh wasn’t fighting to bring Afghans wiser leadership and free elections. He was fighting to preserve the Taliban regime in power. The Taliban had become notorious for brutally implementing Sharia in the areas it controlled, brutalizing women and non-Muslims, amputating hands, stoning people, etc. John Walker Lindh had every reason to know about all that, probably in greater detail than was ever known in the Western press, and as a devout, knowledgeable Muslim who, according to Theroux, “studied Arabic and Islam in Yemen, and…relocated to Pakistan, where he studied at a madrasa,” had every reason to approve and applaud it all. The Taliban regime was internationally regarded as a severe abuser of human rights; Lindh fought for it.
3. Theroux is implying an equivalence between Malawian freedom fighters, Zionists, and Islamic jihad terrorists. This only reveals that he knows little to nothing about Islam, jihad, or Sharia.
4. Theroux was repentant. John Walker Lindh isn’t.
Lindh is probably a couple of years away from walking away guilty as hell and free as a bird, isn’t he? Still wearing his muzzie beard, still being helped financially by his finnochio father and probably living on the government dole for the rest of his life, right? Meanwhile, Michael Spann has been moldering in his grave for 15-16 years, right?
Go to hell, Theroux and take your lib buddies with you. Thanks to people like you, this country is being completely destroyed.
I wonder if the next one he’ll want to have released is Sheikh Rahman. I mean if Morsi couldn’t get him released how will Tradeu? Do we have an ambassador in Canada? (Do we actually need one there? I’m surrounded by Canadians in FLA.)

Wonderful family man his father. Left his wife for an ‘alternative relationship’ when John Walker was a teenager. Sometimes I wonder why these parents just can’t wait for the kid to leave home.
Banda was pro-western. Who was Theroux working for? The CIA or the KGB?
HE is from Marin County. His lawyer dad went gay, and l'il John got pissed as hell.
He began parading around Marin in flowing robes, head towel, etc --the WORKS.
He participated in a POW uprising that ended up killing a CIA operative.
Please note that this is NOT the documentarian Louis Theroux, one of the few of that profession who deserves our respect.

I've suspected all along that the U.S. government never charged him with treason because they never would have wanted that kind of case in court. There would have been a huge public battle over the legal definition of "enemies" in this case, since the U.S. never declared war on anyone. The idiocy of the whole f#%&ing "War on Terror" would have been laid bare right in a Federal courtroom.
If the U.S. government never prosecuted Jane Fonda for treason, it probably had no legal standing to prosecute Johnny bin Walker.
Being a muslim himself, I wouldn’t put it past Obama to pardon him.
By international law, terrorists are illegal combatants. You don’t need to declare war against them. They hold no legal status and can be killed with prejudice and are excluded from all statutory or treaty protections.
Unfortunately, we have a government who not only affords terrorists the rights granted to legitimate warriors, they treat them as citizens. Lindh forfeited his citizenship as soon as he took up arms against our soldiers. He should be flayed and rolled in salt.
I'm a staunch advocate of reading anything that has even the smallest impact on society...but this guy just can't write.
Good authors paint pictures with their words, creating scenes within the readers mind that actually make the reader visualize his creativeness.
Theroux just puts words on a piece of paper...dry...sterile.
Trying to read his stuff is almost as bad as trying to read the crap that Buttcrack Yobama writes or has written.
No soul...no class.
Were it not for the rewriters (screen writers) of Mosquito Coast to be adapted to the screen, the movie would have been a huge bust.
And Theroux leaves no doubt whatsoever as to his political leanings...which are as liberal as a dumb ass liberal can be.
But, unlike Buttcrack and Hildebeest...he does at least write his own stuff, but his stuff does not move to the big screen well without extensive rewrite by others.
But, he has been successful...demonstrating that there is substantial segment of educated society that are just plain stupid and will accept anything.

Well said. This infuriates me because this hits home.
Michael Spann grew up in a neighboring town 7 miles away from my hometown. His father is a very well respected member of the community & a successful Real Estate Agent who helps with Habitat for Humanity. Great family.
Michael’s first wife lived just down the road from me & we were the same age. I used to visit her house often when I was young & we had some great times together.
As you probably know, she died of Cancer not long after Michael’s death. Their children are orphans thanks to that maggot, John Walker Lindh.
I have no tolerance for anyone who advocates for that traitor. He is an unrepentant jihadist & terrorist and should be treated as such. He’s scum.
I invite this Theroux character to visit Marion County, Alabama & plead Lindh’s case. It wouldn’t be too pleasant for him. Lindh’s name is mud, for obvious reasons.

This has always been a fear of mine..that that rat would pardon this one as a parting f u shot to us. I swear I’d fix it myself if I had to. I will never forget Mike Spann’s widow and very young children at his service for the rest of my life. The little rT can rot right where he is.
Once Trump is in office - and Obunghole has been investigated and it is proven that he was not eligible to be president - all of his pardons, and everything he signed, should be declared null and void.

Too bad he’s been reduced to this to support a flagging career; he wrote a couple pretty good books.
