It’s called voter fraud.

This story is troublesome in that if it were not for a politician himself experiencing this and having the clout to blow a horn about this, it would have never made it into the news. It also makes me think this touchscreen problem is waaay too common.

Most touchscreens need x,y position calibration, that match the sensing touch of the screen to what is displayed on the screen. If the stored values for x and y are either changed or lost at some point, the screen will no longer be properly calibrated. This can happen by either hardware/software damage or someone overwriting the correct calibration values. If someone knows how to put the screen into calibration mode, they can often recalibrate it with their fingers (or another device) and save the new x,y values, such that when the button in one place is attempted to be pressed, a button in another specific place is what is actually pressed instead.

Thanks. That makes sense. We still use paper ballots where I live - didn’t know voting machines were touch screen.

I dunno why they call it “calibration”. In computer programming, we’d call it a programming error. And in this case, a program deliberately written to override a Republican vote. Calibration makes it sound like a knob needed turning, like it’s no big deal!

Thanks for telling us that it is not easy to misprogram a touchscreen computer. I’ve no experience in that appication. Does calibrating have anything to do with your program? Or is that a deliberate obfuscation?

What you said is informative so I’ll copy it here:

“I have done automation for 25 years. I have dealt with touch screen essentially since they were invented. I have made very cool and very sophisticated systems over the years that do some pretty cool $hit if I may toot my own horn. The thought of designing a voting interface is in my opinion a laughably simple system that a 5 year old should be able to design. The thought that for however many eleventy billions of dollars government has spent to purchase these pieces of krap no doubt created with “thousands of hours by hundred of engineers” should tell you something. I can honestly say That I can duplicate one of these systems in an hour or two, and it wont accidentally change a vote.”
