The widow of a scientist who killed himself in fear he was about to lose his job at troubled bio-tech start-up Theranos has told of the company's paranoid culture.

Ian Gibbons, the head scientist at the blood test company, died after taking an overdose of painkillers in May 2013 within hours of being summoned for a meeting.

According to his widow, Rochelle, he had found faults in machines the company claimed would 'change the world' by being able to diagnose diseases from a single pinprick of a patient's blood.

Having recently been diagnosed with cancer, he stopped going to work and feared he was going to be fired when bosses called him in.

Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes (above) did not allow employees to speak in groups and had lawyers listen to their phone calls, the widow of her top scientist has claimed

Spoiled bit** with a Steve Jobs complex. Lawyers patrolling the grounds and eavesdropping on conversations via phone? Paranoid psychopath with delusions of grandeur.

Imagine the depression of a fellow human who has cancer and thinks he’s going to be fired. Heartbreaking, so sad. I love America, I love American business, but sometimes the worst nuts run companies.

Sounds like a John Grisham novel. Paranoia....sad really. I guess he felt he couldn’t get out.

You know, I am sick of these arrogant little snots running these businesses and tormenting their employees. I’m 33 myself, I run my own business, which to me makes her abusiveness way out of line. I run my own show and I am my only employee, but frankly put, Holmes and others like her are the reason a lot of people justifiably hate corporations. For some reason they think their ‘genius’ allows them to run people over and toy with their employee’s mental health.

And she reveled in it, being the Silicon Valley golden girl, all the while being as much like Steve Jobs as possible.

You’re right; he probably worried he and his family would be in danger if he tried to quit and move on in life.

Yes, indeed. There is nothing more debilitating than a bad boss. Congrats on your own business, sister! You sound like a decent person with your head on straight.

Agreed. I have no issue with a business owner doing the things they have to do. And sometimes, these things are rough on an employee. But there are far too many out there these days who truly think of the employees as some sort of plaything for mind games.

I cannot see how they cannot understand what recruiting good people, and treating them with a modicum of respect might do for their business.

Power over employee lives and which brings money is a dangerous commodity and holds within it the eventual failure of the company is too much of an attraction for many CEOs.

From my experience, I've learned that when you at the 'senior executive' level, there are some excellent benefits - high pay aside- you leave one company for just about any reason, and you are at another with high rank $ high salary.

The other side; when you are weak, you are vulnerable & unprotected. Here's one example, of many: one of greatest leaders I've known was found to have cancer and requires immediate treatment.

A couple weeks into treatment, this executive's position, the job itself, was ended due to "realignment".

A week later, a new position, with nearly the same title and the same goals & objectives, was created & filled.

We all know this is the danger of rising to that level, we see it all the time. No one is gonna shed a tear for them, so for the most part, it is never mentioned.

For the past 3 years we had a principal who was one of the strangest women I have ever met. Zero people skills, did not care for special needs kids hugging on her. She ran this little neighborhood school into the ground. She made enemies of faculty, staff & parents. In May 1/3 of the faculty quit or early retired. The kids were buck wild. Finally administration got a clue & replaced her. Even though I strangely got along w/ the old principal really well she just went crazy on certain people. In the end I have pity for her because she is missing an essential chip.

Our new principal? Lovely, young, supportive, great sense of humor.......just a breath of fresh air. You are correct: one person can make or break a place.

“Imagine the depression of a fellow human who has cancer and thinks he’s going to be fired”

Too many have forgotten that other employees are watching. That person with cancer was a golden opportunity to be there for them. This is true in spades if they had otherwise been a decent employee. The lesson would not have been lost on the others.
Ironically, these same owners usually demand cultlike loyalty back from the employees.

For stock investors, a simple lesson: if the story management tells is unbelievable, then don’t believe it. There is no magic; successful companies have to work hard to create a ho-hum business.
