Syrian army says it will 'bring down' any Turkish war planes in its airspace

The Syrian military said on Oct. 20 that it would bring down any Turkish war planes entering Syrian air space, a response to air strikes carried out by Turkey overnight in northern Syria.

"Any attempt to once again breach Syrian airspace by Turkish war planes will be dealt with and they will be brought down by all means available," the Syrian army general command said in a statement.

Turkish air strikes hit a group of Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Unit (YPG), the military wing of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), fighters allied to U.S.-backed militia late on Oct. 18, which the Syrian statement called an act of "blatant aggression".

Northern Syria is an increasingly complex battlefield and the Oct. 18 air strikes highlighted the conflicting agendas of NATO members Turkey and the United States.

Turkey supports Free Syrian Army (FSA) fighters opposed to Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and is also trying to push Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) away from Syria's Turkish border.

At the same time, the United States has backed PYD-led forces in their own fight against ISIL, infuriating Ankara, which sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants.

Whose missiles are going to be launched against Turkish warplanes if they mount the next airstrike in Syria? Would Russian air defense in Syria launch theirs, breaking the recent deal made between Turkey and Russia? This may be a warning to Turkey via Syrian intermediary by Russians.

The alliance are confusing. I thought Turkey was buying oil from ISIS, and aiding (through coercion) in the redistribution of the Syrian refugees.

I dunno, but I believe any sovereign nation can pretty much take out any warplane that enters it’s airspace.

Turkey always want to expand her power into Iraq and Syria. Erdogan has been dreaming of restoring a Turkish empire. Now they are moving their troops into these territories on the pretext of fighting ISIS. ISIS is, in a way, their tool of choice to advance their real agenda. It has been used to undermine Syrian regime and now to justify its military “invasion.”

In before the first “if Turkey shoots down an invader in its airspace, they have attacked NATO”.

“Would Russian air defense in Syria launch theirs, breaking the recent deal made between Turkey and Russia?”

Did the deal include Turkey attacking into Syria at will?

I don’t know the details. News reports I saw did not mention exactly what they agreed upon. It is possible that Erdogan is pushing the envelope, carefully avoiding direct confrontation with Russian forces.

If Turkey is flying into Syria, and gets a plane shot down, they can not invoke article 5 to get NATO involved - that is only if a NATO member is attacked.

So Turkey is on their own in Syria. The capability is there to shoot them down, and those guys are probably not just bluffing.

Sounds like the new rule will be no Turkish air in Syria - very good for the Kurds.

Probably smart for Assad too. No matter what deals the Russians and Turks might make, Erdogan will always want Sunni extremists to take over Syria in the end. Assad will need that Kurdish buffer.

Exponents of the Religion of Peace fighting a war of each against the other and all against all.

What a peaceful world we would all enjoy if they’d just drop dead.

The US (Obama, Hillary, McCain, et al) has managed to create the most ungodly mess, a true morass, in Syria, that can be imagined. Not to mention around 400,000 dead so far. And it virtually all could have been avoided. What a bunch of G-D pinheads! This should be a lesson not to be forgotten for a thousand years.

It doesn't matter if a Russian or a Syrian pushes the button.

They are all Russian systems, and all the operators were trained by Russians.

The Turks would do well to heed this warning. An F-16 is no match for the S-400.

They could lose a dozen before they even know what happened.
