This photo was taken by my friend Mike Oria http://www.mikeoria.com/ from my other friend George's roof deck Sunday. He's an awesome photographer.

How cool it this?

This is during an annual event on Columbus Day in S.F. where the Blue Angels fly over San Francisco performing their amazing maneuvers. Here the Blue Angels are seen here from the foot of famous, winding Lombard Street.

How hard would it be to

1) Know exactly WHERE these Blue Angels would be passing this exact spot?

2) Know WHEN they be passing this exact spot?

The cameramen had to have had one of those automatic cameras that takes a bunch of pictures in a row. Even then, one wonders how he knew where these amazing jets would be passing by Russian Hill. Maybe he knows the pilots and they told him exactly when and where they’d be around Russian Hill or he asked them to go by this exact spot so he could take this amazing picture.

Cool stuff.

And the mayor of SF will of course condemn the militaristic action by our armed forces.

Good stuff. Not sure how he pulled it off. A microsecond at an exact place in the sky at the exact time.

I saw them once in SF, as I recall on a July 4 weekend. At the end they came from behind us a very low altitude. Scared the hell out of some people and was very, very loud.

I saw them in San Francisco, a couple of times at Stanford Stadium before a game, and once in Virginia Beach while I was on the beach. On the beach, we got a free show for couple of hours as they practiced their maneuvers over the water.

Cool stuff.

BTW, if you don’t know about Virginia Beach, it is a huge military/naval area as well as shipbuilding area. There is a fair amount of jet noise in certain areas. You see bumper stickers all over the place that say, “I LOVE JET NOISE.” When asked why they love jet noise they reply, “IT IS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM.”

Gotta love it.

I never get tired of watching our military jets. I use to sit outside one of the gates at MacDill AFB and watch the F-16 take off. Sadly they are long gone but we still have the refuelling tankers.

You have to be there to experience it. Way cool. The Blue Angels performed several times each day over several days (practice runs before the weekend). So there were ample locations to catch photos like this. My wife and I were on the Pier 39 upper floor at the pier end overlooking the bay last weekend, but didn’t have our cameras with us. There was one time a flock of about 20 large birds took off from the roof above us, in a V-formation that perfectly matched the formation of the Blue Angels in the background in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. In the next 3 seconds or so the birds flew towards the Blue Angels just as the jets broke formation to go vertical. Everyone screamed out in delight, especially the ones with cameras. Perfect weather with clear skies, nice hot day.

Well, no. Mayor Lee is pro-military and fully supports Fleet Week every year. He is pro-business and understands how much money Fleet Week brings into the city. Even former mayor Feinstein pushed hard to keep Fleet Week coming to SF, and she silenced liberal adversaries who wanted to end the tradition. Money talks.

What a beautiful sight!

Off topic, but regarding Lombard Street: every day buses full of Chinese tourists are being dumped at the top of that crooked street. Home-owners are incensed and trying to stop the practice. They're getting flooded with 6,000 Chinese tourists a day walking down their street, picking or trampling flowers, and some urinating in their doorways. This only started in the last year or so after the street was heavily publicized in China. So no one should even think about going to that street right now.

It was my honor to serve in the USAF, 68-72, as s Security Policeman. I spent 2 1/2 years at Nellis AFB (Las Vegas, Nevada) where the Thunderbirds are based. I never grew tired of watching them practice when they weren’t on tour in their loud, big and powerful F-4’s. Years later I saw them at a Beale AFB (Northern California) air show when they had switched to the F-16’s and was amazed at their nimbleness (vectored thrust). Returning to Las Vegas next month for the first time since I left in ‘72 to see the last air show of the season and re-trace some old steps in the area and note the changes. Also saw the Blue Angels a few years back during Fleet Week in San Francisco in their FA-18’s. Just awesome.

I drove UP that street in a rental car. Yep, one night about 2am back in the 80’s while on a wild date with a girl I met at an art gallery.

Memories ...

That was a single jerk in SF politics against the Blue Angels. The majority of San Franciscans are fine with Fleet Week and the Blue Angels. And that's the situation even with liberal aholes running around. As for the 2006 incident, a liberal majority on the Board of Supervisors blocked the Iowa from being ported here. The mayor was for it, as was Senator Feinstein. There are other military craft here, and yes there is a loud group of liberal aholes who are against it. Most of them are here from elsewhere in the country, mostly from the northeast USA.

When I was young, SF was a military town and solidly Republican. Then we got invaded in the mid-1960s by outsiders and it was flipped Democrat. My dad was active career military, and I often visited bases in and around SF with him. At times we would have an Army jeep parked in front of our home. The Presidio, Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, Treasure Island Naval Base, National Guard Armory - all in San Francisco proper. He worked across the Bay Bridge at the Alameda Naval Air Base. Now its all gone, devoid of military presence. My dad passed in the early 1970s, he would have been pissed to see what happened to this once proud military-friendly town.
