This could be a scene from almost every Clive Cussler novel. Not that I don’t enjoy reading them.

I read that story where at the end the engine slid into one of those Great Lakes. I’ve read most but not all.

The captain of the Incan was an interesting guy from Scotland and spoke with a thick brogue. The Incan’s business model was based on moving cars out of Canada to the US without moving them to a far eastern rail connection.
Sometime in the 90s, that shortcut was finally built and Incan left the lake.
Last I heard it was working Seattle up to Alaska...

Good books but they don’t translate into movies very well.
