Activists converge on downtown Glencoe, pushing gun control (barf alert)

"I just want to be a neutral," in the gun control debate, said Stephanie Macakanja. "I really try not to be political."

But she agreed Saturday to allow a "no-guns" sticker on the front door of her two-year-old Glencoe gift shop, Blacksheep General Store, 346 Park Ave.

"If they came in here one-on-one, we might have had a longer conversation," she said. "But when they came in here en masse — just give me the sticker."

Northbrook gun-control activists Lee Goodman and Nancy Goodman, joined by about two dozen members of their group Peaceful Communities and members of their Glencoe temple, Congregation Hakafa, Saturday targeted downtown Glencoe to ask merchants to post the stickers. Six posted them, they said, and none refused.

Criminals, come on in! The coast is clear!

Yeah, because places like Glencoe, Kennilworth and Highland Park are cesspools of crime and violence. [/s]

Chicago is dying, and these people are working on pulling the plug.

Chicago is probably dying, but the North & NW suburbs seem to be doing better than ever.

Except if you look on Zillow, you will see that there are thousands of homes for sale in those suburbs. And very few are selling. Nobody wants to own a high priced home in Illinois. A million dollar home in Illinois is about $25,000 in taxes plus the countries highest 11% sales tax. And they tell us they are going to go up a lot.

You’re going to pay $25K in taxes for a $1M home in most places. Certainly in the Northeast.

Except that 30 miles away I can pay less than half. Indiana and Wisconsin are booming. And this is just the starting point. We have not fixed anything. We have the largest debt of any state. Wisconsin has a surplus. And Indiana is close to Wisconsin.

If rates go up, Illinois is in really big trouble, and large home owners are getting the bill. So there is a lot of renting on the North Shore.

Yeah, I know IL is in big trouble. Moved away from there long ago with no regrets. To me, the place is just one big strip mall except for the Forest preserves. But my Sister lives in the NN suburbs and life for her seems to be good. She does not complain and her property taxes are still lower than mine. Certainly, it LOOKS healthy whenever I visit, but looks can be deceiving.

Anyone who allows their shop to be bullied in that manner will lose my business for as long as the sticker is on the door. Whether or not I am carrying (and I live in the People’s Republic of Maryland, where carry permits are almost impossible to get), I will not support someone who opposes freedom.

I’m in East Wilmette. So, I must be very close to your sister. However I live in Wisconsin too, 3 hours north. Here I pay very little taxes. Everything is cheaper, Trump signs everywhere but Milwaukee and Madison. No crime, no litter, very clean, low taxes, low prices and the state has a surplus. Here, houses, hospitals, and colleges are far less expensive too. But the greatest thing is that nobody locks their bikes, or their cars or their houses. In fact they leave their cars running in the winter when they run into the grocery store. There’s a gun in every other house but no shootings. Interesting.

Typical liberal. Thinks that a “No Guns” sticker will stop a criminal.

I used to date a girl in Madison & spent a lot of time there. Loved it, especially State Street and having beers at the Memorial Union on Lake Mendota.

On the flip side, I remember there was one WI city (Racine?) just over the border than became a welfare magnet because WI offered better benefits than IL. Maybe they got smart and fixed that. I also know several people who live in WI (Madison area) and they likewise love it.

While I grew up in the Midwest, I find it kind of boring in general. Especially because I like beaches and skiing. My biggest regret is that there are no Walker Bros pancake houses where I live.

My Wilmette house is half a mile from Walker Brothers. I worked there in high school. I may have bussed your table if you were there in the ‘70s.

Lake Michigan is in my back yard, but the beaches are white half the year. People here will drive their cars out on the lake to fish. There is skiing here too as long as you don’t like long runs and you don’t mind skiing in -5 degrees.

Yeah, I should have said beaches with real WAVES (LOL). I also went skiing in Lake Geneva a few times. Blah.

I actually do like the NN suburbs, just no desire to live there anymore.

I think the first time I went to WB was ~1990 (while I was visiting)—sounds like you were long gone by then.

I don’t know where you live in WI, but I live in SE Wisconsin. It’s expensive here. It used to be cheap until the people in IL heard about it and moved up here. Drove up real-estate prices and taxes. I guess it’s still cheaper than Kenilworth, but Lake Geneva is pretty pricey.
