Robert F. Stryker (November 9, 1944-November 7, 1967) was a United States Army soldier received the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Vietnam War.  He is buried in Pine Hill Cemetery Throop, New York.  The Army Stryker vehicle is named in his and PFC Stuart S. Stryker's honor.

Rank and organization: Specialist Four, U.S. Army, Company C, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division.

Place and date: Near Loc Ninh, Republic of Vietnam, November 7, 1967.

Entered service at: Throop, N.Y.

Born: November 9, 1944, Auburn, N.Y.

Citation:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Specialist Stryker, U.S. Army, distinguished himself while serving with Company C. Spec. Stryker was serving as a grenadier in a multicompany reconnaissance in force near Loc Ninh. As his unit moved through the dense underbrush, it was suddenly met with a hail of rocket, automatic weapons and small arms fire from enemy forces concealed in fortified bunkers and in the surrounding trees. Reacting quickly, Spec. Stryker fired into the enemy positions with his grenade launcher. During the devastating exchange of fire, Spec. Stryker detected enemy elements attempting to encircle his company and isolate it from the main body of the friendly force. Undaunted by the enemy machinegun and small-arms fire, Spec. Stryker repeatedly fired grenades into the trees, killing enemy snipers and enabling his comrades to sever the attempted encirclement. As the battle continued, Spec. Stryker observed several wounded members of his squad in the killing zone of an enemy claymore mine. With complete disregard for his safety, he threw himself upon the mine as it was detonated. He was mortally wounded as his body absorbed the blast and shielded his comrades from the explosion. His unselfish actions were responsible for saving the lives of at least 6 of his fellow soldiers. Spec. Stryker's great personal bravery was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the U.S. Army.

Calming Your Soul

Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10

While attending a concert, my mind detoured to a troublesome issue that insisted on my attention. Thankfully, the distraction was short-lived as the words of a beautiful hymn began to reach deep into my being. A men’s a capella group was singing “Be Still, My Soul.” Tears welled up as I listened to the words and contemplated the restful peace that only God can give:

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side! Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain; leave to thy God to order and provide; in every change He faithful will remain.

When we keep our minds on Jesus, He keeps our minds at peace.

When Jesus was denouncing the unrepentant towns where He had done most of His miracles (Matt. 11:20–24), He still had words of comfort for those who would come to Him. He said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened . . . . learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (vv. 28–29).

This statement is striking! Immediately following His strong words for those who were rejecting Him, Jesus extended an invitation to all to draw near to Him to find the peace we all yearn for. Jesus is the only one who can calm our restless, weary souls.

 I come to You now, Lord, in need of rest for my heart. Help me to trust You and be confident in Your love.

INSIGHT:

Our passage today comes on the heels of Jesus denouncing the cities where most of His miracles were performed (Matt. 11:20–24). Bethsaida, one of the denounced cities, literally means “fisherman’s house.” It was a village on the north side of the Sea of Galilee and could have been the birthplace of three of the disciples: Andrew, Peter, and Philip.

Glad y’all are having a good time in MO. Must be a real blast for your MIL seeing family as well as old friends who showed up for the reunion.

Except for going out Fri. night, it’s been a quiet weekend here. Now just sitting here watching the NCIS - Los Angeles season premier.

How long before y’all head back home? Hope you don’t get stuck driving through crummy wet weather.

God bless his memory. On a related subject, I have been in conversation on Face Book with USAA on why they, of all companies, sponsor the NFL. They are talking out of both sides of the mouth saying they honor our vets and military while paying the NFL to allow disrespect to our flag and country. Here is the latest answer I got from them: USAA Thanks for reaching out, (name), and providing your feedback. Our goal in our sponsorship is to honor and appreciate the military community, and that will continue to be our focus, as we have no plans to end our role. Professional football continues to be among the most watched programming and through our sponsorship, an avenue for us to encourage America in joining us in saying “thank you” to our military and their families. - Cathleen Translation: We are making money sponsoring the NFL so nothing else is important. If you agree they should not sponsor the NLF, please let them know.
