National Anthem protests spread to college football, WNBA

Liberty guard Brittany Boyd sat on the bench with her head bowed in prayer during the National Anthem before a WNBA playoff game.

Hours earlier, college football players for Michigan and Michigan State, along with a group of students at North Carolina, raised their fists during the playing of "The Star-Spangled Banner" on Saturday.

Since 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the Anthem before NFL preseason games, citing racial injustice and police brutality, his movement has slowly spread across fields and courts in the U.S. On Saturday, college and professional athletes joined together to follow his lead after a week punctuated by riots in Charlotte, N.C., and the killing of an unarmed black man in Tulsa, Okla.

This wasn't the first time Boyd sat during the anthem. She said she also did it at the last few games.

"I don't want to stand up. I choose not to stand up and I sit down and pray," the second-year guard said. "Colin and his message about social injustice going on in this country today is something I believe needs change."

The Berkeley, Calif., native had a Kaepernick jersey hanging in her locker and wore it to the arena Saturday night.

Her New York teammates stood, arms locked with their heads bowed before their WNBA playoff game with Phoenix. Mercury players Mistie Bass and Kelsey Bone kneeled, just as they had done during their first-round playoff game. Bass was inspired that younger athletes were joining an effort that until this weekend had been mostly led by the pros.

Keep doing it and keep losing viewers.

The WNBA? I’m sure all 57 fans support the disrespectful protest.

Hard lines need to be drawn here. Either fire them for not standing up, with their hand over their heart, or do away with the National Anthem at sporting events.

But recognize that it will be the flag next, then the police providing security, then the white males who are most vocally supportive of such things.

Collisions of cultures, only one can survive.

Put their names in a database, so employers have an additional tool to screen out those with irrational minds, entitlement driven motives, disregard for their own country, etc.

We need to shut down university sports. It’ll eliminate the campus jock culture, streamline the idiots out of the education system, and basically put a stop to this. Time for people to grow up and university should be a place of study, not an expensive version of high school.

No football in my house today. No Fox News either, for that matter, although I might check to see if there’s a replay of Judge Jeanine tonite.

We had all better believe it. Any building or monument that bears the name of a famous person that is not favorable to the BLM, will be renamed or destroyed.

MLB and NHL need to get in front of this:
- State that the League plays the Anthems to honor the troops; no other reason.
- So you stand with cap or hand on heart or stay in locker room, or you don’t play.
- If Players Union disagrees, stop playing the Anthems at all; the League’s profits and salaries will wither away as a result.

I agree. I kind of feel like a Roman citizen in 450 A.D. Watching everything great being destroyed by invaders and people who are hostile to civilization, and nothing being done to stop the progress into the Dark Ages.

Except, now, we all have the benefit of hindsight and can learn from the past, if we so choose, and not consign ourselves to the same fate.
