Pipeline Expected To Restart After Leak Triggered Surging Gas Prices In South (Alabama)

Associated Press

A main gas line is expected to restart Wednesday with a temporary bypass after a leak and spill in Alabama led to surging fuel prices and some gas shortages across the South, a company official said Tuesday.

The roughly 500-foot section of pipe that will serve as the bypass is now complete, and the company expects that will allow it to restart the main gasoline line, Colonial Pipeline spokesman Steve Baker told The Associated Press.

"Tomorrow's restart of the main gasoline line is a key milestone," Baker said. "However, it will take a few days for the fuel supply chain to fully recover."

The bypass was needed to move fuel around the leak of its main gasoline pipeline in Shelby County, Alabama. The leak, which spilled between 252,000 gallons and 336,000 gallons of gasoline into a detention pond, was detected Sept. 9.

The leak has led to some gas shortages and higher prices at the pumps in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.

On Tuesday, gas prices continued to climb in several southern states, the auto club AAA reported.

In Georgia, Tuesday's average price for regular gas rose about 5 cents from Monday, to an average $2.36 statewide -- up nearly 27 cents over the past week. Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia also saw prices climb since Monday, AAA reported Tuesday.

In Alabama, Gov. Robert Bentley said gas prices in parts of the state rose 20 cents over the weekend after the pipeline leak, but said he didn't consider that price gouging.

"It changes overnight sometimes that much," he said.

I am in HSV and was talking to a friend who lives in Athens just west of us. There is no problem there. It seems that the problems are in north HSV. Panic buying caused the biggest problems. That is why I have not gone to get any. I have 1/2 tank. I do not have to go anywhere until Thursday.

I gues that’s good to know for anyone who buys gas at a QT (what is that?) in Greensville. How many Freepers ever heard of Greensville?

I used to work on the Philips pipeline from Borger, Texas to Denver. The crew I worked with did maintenance on the pump stations and other routine maintenance.

When you consider that over 250,000 gallons of gas were dumped in one place, it is really amazing that they can fix it with a 500 foot section of bypass. Putting in a bypass would require some serious welding. They had to avoid all the spill in order to be safe.

What is amazing is that no EnviroNazi group, EPA, OSHA, etc. have interjected the heavy hand of the federal government into the repair / reopening of the pipeline. I could imagine the Sierra Club and the EPA tying this up in court for ages.

QT is Quick Trip - just another 7-11 kind of store. As I remember, lots of Greenville’s scattered across the south and southeast, don’t know I’ve ever heard of or seen Greensville though.

If it hadn’t been an election year, the EPA might have heavily interfered. I’ve seen Philips fined thousands for having an intermittent DRIP from a fueling bib on a river dock.

I would disagree with that description.

The QT here is always the price leader (meaning having the best/lowest price). It is very well maintained inside and out. The cashiers are always pleasant, the coffee is good and inexpensive. They have always been innovative in their hot foods. So, very unlike a 7-11...

Excellent point. It seems this was a case of private enterprise and market ingenuity getting the job done pronto before federal bureaucrats could shut it down to study the affects on an endangered grasshopper.

My, my - tough Tuesday?

I said “kind of store”. Meaning it’s not a Costco or 14 lane, 28 pump Shell. I also could have used a descriptor that my grandsons use to describe all quickie types of stores which is “stop and rob”.

Many stations w/o gas in Asheville Nc. Found a Speedway Station today that was selling regular and plus. It took a while to locate one. Heading up to Tn tomorrow and Atlanta Friday. Hope we get some juice delivered soon.
