Japan will step up its activity in the contested South China Sea through joint training patrols with the United States and bilateral and multilateral exercises with regional navies, Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said on Thursday.

Inada said in a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank, that Japan's increased engagement in the area, where Japan shares U.S. concerns about China's pursuit of extensive territorial claims, would include capacity building for coastal nations.

Japan also has its own dispute with China over territory in the East China Sea.

Inada said that if the world condoned attempts to change the rule of law and allowed “rule bending” to succeed, the "consequences could become global."

With over 100 modern ships and submarines the Japanese Navy is formidable.

And, they could likely defeat the Chinese navy in a short but exciting engagement.

Certainly their CAP would be superior with F-15s.

Oh, and the Japanese have a proven tradition.

This ain’t your father’s China, ain’t your father’s Japan.

China’s military expenditures have been double digits for a couple of decades. They are stronger than ya think.

You're right, they have not been tested. That said, they are one of the few nations that can field a millions of men on the battlefield. Not to mention they've upgraded their missile and satellite technology. Grown all branches of their military for a couple of decades now.

Much more formidable than in WWII. None the less, it would be very ugly.
