China is fast becoming a scientific force to be reckoned with, says a new report published by Nature.
The list, which ranks the world's institutions and countries according to their scientific output, puts China second only to the United States. The rankings are based on the number of high profile publications released last year.
Canada ranked 7th, which, considering the difference in the sheer number of scientists compared with China or the U.S., is pretty impressive.
The top institution in terms of publications was the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a massive engine of scientific growth in the country. It consists of hundreds of regional institutes and includes two universities. To put it in perspective for something us Westerners understand — it beat out Harvard.
What is China investing in?
The Chinese government has indicated it wants to invest energy and funds in brain research, gene science, big data and medical robots.
But perhaps the most ambitious scientific project is the Chinese space program. The largest radio telescope in the world was recently built in southwestern China, and took only five years to complete.
These radio telescopes are massive in order to listen to some of the weakest and faintest signals from the furthest reaches of the universe. They've also planned a mission to the far side of the moon in 2018 and intend to send a rover to Mars in 2020.
And from the biggest objects in the universe to the smallest, China plans to build a particle accelerator larger than the one currently in operation in Europe at the CERN facility.

When I want to see what’s on Mars, I look at the pictures sent back by the Rover.
When I want to see what’s in outer space, I look at Hubble photos.
And how any Chinese have set foot on the moon...?
The Chinese have a way to go yet before they even begin to touch us.
On the other hand, they’re way ahead when grabbing land - as the Tibetans will attest and anyone who has an interest in the South China Sea well knows.
Should China eschew “Climate Science” they will come out way ahead.
I don’t think the Chinese are in the “Climate Science” nonsense. Neither are they into promoting LGBTQRSTUV, queers in the military, letting men use womens bathrooms, women’s studies, ethnic studies, multicult, same sex marriage, etc.
They are into hard reality, we are in delusional land.
They’re going to kick our butts in 20 years if we don’t change course.

Fudge climate data to get a “hockey stick”?
The hockey stick is a growth curve. You calculate that using the same math formula that you use to calculate interest earned or interest paid.
There is another way of measuring that using doubling rates or tripling rates, or any rate.
How long will it take to double the money in your investment or how long will it take to double the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.
Doubling is 2x so you find the natural logarithm of 2 which is 0.693147, which you round off to 0.7. Then you divide that by the interest rate or growth rate.
If you are earning 10% then you will double your money in 7 years. If CO2 emissions are growing at 10% then you double the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere every 7 years.
At 7% the doubling is 10 years
At 1% it is 70 years.
Consequently, to extend this we try to reduce emissions of CO2. Stationary sources of CO2 such as power plants are converting from coal to natural gas and renewables. Mobile sources of CO2 such as auto tailpipes are being reduced by raising CAFE standards.
The price of solar, wind, and batteries keep falling and will replace coal, natural gas, and oil so the investors are jumping up and down wanting to invest in solar, wind, and electric cars.
Which brings us back to China. In 2015 China invested more money in renewables that the US did. If the US needs offshore windmills then we have to buy them in Europe or China. GE Waukasha moved their generator plant from Wisconsin to Canada because of the ExIm bank dust-up. HVDC transmissions lines are being built all over the world, except in the US where none are being built.
If you have the manufacturing, you get the researcb to support it. If you lose the manufacturing, eventually the research goes too.
Yes, they use a tried and true research method, they steal it from us, or other communists here give it to them like Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Obama.
Not to worry.
Our esteemed institutions are turning out thousands of social justice warriers who can easily defeat the Chineese.
Pay no attention to the fact that the SJWs have a sum IQ of around 50, no abilities to create anything useful, and will never ever hold a real job.
The renewable energy business all over the world is booming and those nations that have positioned themselves to profit from this will benefit.
In the US, states such as Texas, Iowa, and California will benefit much more than Florida.
The man that wrote the letter to the editors at WaPo and talked about the offshore windmills off Rhode Island failed to mention that they were manufactured in France.
My son had a PhD prof in grad school who was from China. The prof was a geologist with a very high IQ.
The students asked, “Why did you decide to study geology?”
The Chinese immigrant replied, “I was so honored when the government told me I had been selected to study geology. They CHOSE this field of study for me; I had not expressed a preference. I resolved to study as hard as I could to make my family proud.”
So, now he lives and teaches in Houston. Our gain...China’s loss.
China graduates over 500,000 engineers yearly. Even with their screwed up, fascist system, they will achieve dominance through numbers alone.....
Unless we can open the door to many of the best Chinese immigrants.
YES, we need to figure out how to motivate American-born students. YES, we need to graduate more scientists and engineers.
But, we can also try to attract the best and brightest from around the world. China cannot do that!
I firmly believe that what will get American kids off the couch and away from video games is competition.
By the way, when I was young, what motivated me to study science and engineering was the space program. The idea of exploring the Solar System and colonizing new planets drove me through 20 years of school. I noted that many of the Apollo program veteran engineers were immigrants.
And we will deserve it.
Any country more concerned with pervert and criminal rights than with science and engineering deserves to perish.
