Agreed. I served in the Navy aboard a ship and worked in CIC. One of my jobs was in the radar division. Those little harrassing Iranian boats would be seen on radar long before seen by our ‘look outs’.
It would up to the Captain to decide a course of action to either stay on course or divert away from them. Clearly he had been given orders to from a higher authority to stay on course and suffer the indignation.
Back in the day, the Captain would have ordered full speed ahead plow right through them causing them to capsize.

To fire on a foreign ship in international waters may be an act of war. That may feel good; but is probably a step too far.
How about we have a Fire Drill? We turn on the water pumps and see how full we can fill that little speed boat with high pressure water on its next pass. And if we knock a few sailors into the ocean; aww shucks. Accidents seem to happen when silly Iranian sailors act stupidly.
This way, lessons are taught; humiliation is dealt; and acts of war are avoided.

Why not robustly steel-reinforce the prows of a few of the ships we’re sending into the Persian Gulf, and when the Iranian patrol boats play chicken, instead of our ships swerving out of the way at the last moment, stay their course and cut the Iranian host shots in half?
