IIRC, the perfection of a computer driven car makes its actions difficult to anticipate for real drivers, and that was the explanation for the crashes.

The victim’s family should sue the US gov for the wrongful death.

It’s not so much the trees but the squirrels moving them.

...Tesla has already had one death associated with making their owners beta testers, and they get a complete pass on it.

Tesla warns its users to remain alert at all times so as to take over control from the "autopilot" in emergency situations. The real problem is that people put too much faith in the automatic systems that do work most of the time, and refuse to stay alert for the cases when they don't.

This video shows a Tesla on autopilot crashing into a disabled vehicle. The car directly ahead of the Tesla driven by an alert driver easily avoids the problem.

They’re not getting a pass, the drivers failed. The autopilot system is NOT a replacement for the driver. It’s basically cruise control with with some lane assistance, you’re still supposed to be paying attention. They aren’t beta testers, they’re people who made bad assumptions about the feature and didn’t bother to read the manual.

“Van Zant’s inspiration for the song was the increasing reckless indulgences of the band members culminating in the evening when guitarist Gary Rossington got drunk and high and survived the crash of his new car into an oak tree along Mandarin Road in Jacksonville, Florida.”

Why is a driver crashing his/her vehicle into a tree newsworthy?

Well, because the Luddites get to decry electric cars.

“Tesla warns its users to remain alert at all times so as to take over control from the “autopilot” in emergency situations.”

You build a system that lets it drive the car and it should be safe to drive the car. Regardless of some lines in the users manual saying to be alert.

If an aircraft company made an autopilot this bad they would already be shut down and have FAA investigators so far up their behind they would be proof against every type of rectal ailment.
