As governor of Massachusetts, William Weld supported various gun control schemes, including a ban on semi-automatic firearms. Unfortunately, and despite being the Libertarian candidate for vice president, Weld continues his anti-gun ways.
In July 2016, while NRA and other groups concerned with civil liberties were hard at work fighting legislation that would have stripped Americans of their Second Amendment rights without due process based merely on their placement on a secret government watch list, Weld expressed support for such measures.
In an interview with the Washington Post Editorial Board, Weld said of watch list gun control legislation:
I think the Susan Collins stuff looks good. I mean, it's hard for me, uh, having proposed this super-duper task force getting bits of information from all over to say, it wouldn't lie with good grace in my mouth to say 'no, don't use the terrorist watch list as a source of such information.' So I would go with that.
In an August interview with Revolt.tv, Weld reiterated this position. When asked about what can be done to control this flow of guns, Weld responded, you shouldnt have anybody whos on a terrorist watch list be able to buy any gun at all.
Weld went on to suggest to the interviewer that both handguns and AR-15s are a problem, stating, The problem with handguns is probably even worse than the problem of the AR-15.
This latest episode reveals that when pressed on firearms issues, despite any assurances he has given to voters, Welds political instincts are to abandon gun owners and embrace gun control.

I think Weld is the problem.
LINO
How can a libertarian be anti-gun? That’s like a pro-life abortionist.
Libertarians are Liberals. Many Libertarians will try to deny it, but they take Liberal positions about 95% of the time.
He also stated that 5 round “clips” are standard military issue and that you can turn an AR into a machine gun by simply removing a pin. The stupidity and ignorance burn bright in this one.
Where is that magic Pin on my AR? I can’t find it.
I find very little that is “libertarian” about either Johnson or Weld. They are both statists.
agreed.
These two clowns are there to siphon votes and will never tell the truth on where they stand.
The former gov of New Mexico is an idiot. Is their theme song “Everybody Must Get Stoned”?
Weld has zero gun knowledge, too. Probably thinks Lucas McCain fired fifteen times w/o reloading in the Rifleman intro.
Ask him the difference between a clip & a magazine.
“Well, they’re the same, aren’t they?”
Technically he is correct t. Back when battle rifles were loaded with clips most of them WERE 5 rounders. Now we use magazines which are different things.
Gee, I thought “Liberaltarians” were all about live free and die without govt interference?
So dope’s ok, sex with anyone is ok, but the Constitutional Right to carry arms isn’t?
Gotitt
Amazing how the LP fell apart and nominated these two statists!
Any candidate of any party who wants any new restrictions on our individual, God-given right to keep and bear arms is unacceptable. Even showing enthusiasm for the existing, unconstitutional restrictions on our gun rights is a deal-breaker.
The traditional meaning of “liberal” has been lost. It looks like they’ve gone to work on “libertarian”, too.
There definitely is a problem with AR-15’s. There are a lot of people who don’t have one.
Johnson wants to gut the 1st Amendment and Weld wants to gut the 2nd.
I’ll leave it to the party as to whether they should be called “libertarian”, but neither is worthy of a FReeper’s vote.
Some of us prefer the commie-chic mystique of the Kalashnikov.
;^)
William Weld is hardly a libertarian... he’s a Massachusetts squish RINO... not even as good as Mitt Romney.
A vote for Johnson/Weld is a vote for Hillary and that’s shameful.
