Georgetown, a Jesuit university, is the first U.S. college with a Hindu priest as a chaplain

When Brahmachari Vrajvihari Sharan led his first worship service in his new job as a Hindu chaplain Sunday, he knew his audience.

As the service began, he asked worshipers to clear their minds. “Close all the tabs that are open, just as you would do to a Firefox window,” he said.

The comparison — of a spiritual mindset to an Internet browser — worked at once. More than 40 college students, many of whom had been up until 3 a.m. the Saturday night before this 9 a.m. service, chuckled appreciatively and fell into a reverent silence.

While leaders of the Catholic church continue their diligent search for clues as to why church attendance and influence are declining.

A Jesuit was with my late Pastors group when they met John Paul II. When he was introduced as a Jesuit. JP2 asked “But are you a Catholic”?”

John Paul II was respected by all Christians. Probably the only Pope in my lifetime one can say that about. I heard him deliver the Sunday blessing in St. Peter’s Square a couple years after the assassination attempt. Can’t imagine what it must have been like to meet the man in person.

This is the “Catholic” University that used to have abortion-promoting, Democrat Congressman and Catholic priest Father Drinan as a professor. A Hindu priest is an improvement over the “Catholics” who teach there.

Georgetown was always “multicultural” from its beginning — due to the Jesuits. I think they go too far against Catholic teaching, but what is the beef with having a variety of religious chaplains for the various religions of students who attend GU?

Not sure that Hindu deities are demons. The article mentioned that there is a debate within Hinduism as to whether they worship many gods, or one Supreme Being (Atman) with many manifestations.

I am not saying "religions are all the same" or that Catholics consider Hinduism totally hunky-dory religiously (!!)(!!!) but it is somewhat thoughtless to equate the whole thing with demonism tout court.

Myself, I would argue that there is only one God, Who is the creator of everything that exists.

Thank you, Mrs. Don-o.

Hinduism teaches that there is one Supreme Godhead. He has many names, which are descriptive; translated into English some names mean the Supreme Soul, the Supreme Controller, the All Powerful, the All Beautiful and Opulent, The Savior of the Poor and Fallen, and many more.

From Him springs all existences, all energies, and all souls, and He has many agents in this mortal world, called devatas, often taken to be “gods” - they are mortal creatures, with more powers than ordinary human beings, they are basically administors in God’s universal government.

[As an aside, the Vedas - Hindu scriptures - teach that this mortal realm is only a small portion of the totality of existence. There is also the eternal realm, Kingdom of God - one name in Sanskrit is “Para Vyom” - the Supreme Sky. The universe we see and know is basically created for the rehabilitation of souls who have turned away from God’s loving service.]

Ignorant Hindus sometimes think that these demi-gods are somehow supreme. In the Bhagavad Gita there are very clear instructions, that only the less intelligent worship these devatas. The devatas themselves must die, and they themselves worship that Supreme Godhead. Some of the demi-gods or devatas have frightening or ugly features; these can be compared to stern judges of criminals, executioners, and the like. None of them are meant to be worshiped as God.

There are many, many misconceptions about Hinduism, especailly since many westerners “took it up” and most of them got it really wrong!

Educated (in the sense of in their own scriptures and traditions) Hindus generally respect Christians and Jews as fellow monotheists.

(There is a problem with very aggressive and dishonest conversion efforts in India with some mostly Protestant sects; Mother Theresa was revered in India and many Hindu girls became nuns under her direction and I never heard that Hindus were upset by this.)

He went to the School of Foreign Service. It amused me that they put these grads earliest on graduation day—some absurd hour of the morning. These are their prize students and I guess they figured the earliest risers.
